About Mr Sanjay Miranda

Personal Profile

Mr Sanjay Miranda is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. He specialises in conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow and peripheral nerves. He welcomes NHS, privately insured, and self-paying patients. Mr Miranda sees approximately 70 patients a week across his clinical practice, with 400 to 500 surgical procedures performed annually.

Mr Miranda qualified from Newcastle upon Tyne medical school in 1993 and trained in 'orthopaedic surgery' across centres in Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham and Coventry. He undertook 2 years of fellowship training in 'Hand and Upper Limb Surgery' at internationally-recognised centres such as:

  • The Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, one of the UK's leading specialist hand surgery units
  • Sydney, Australia, working in a unit specialising in highly-complex and esoteric hand surgical conditions

He has been a full-time hand and upper limb surgeon since 2003 and a Consultant since 2005. He holds a Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 'Trauma & Orthopaedics' and a Diploma in 'Hand Surgery' from The University of Manchester. He is registered on the GMC Specialist Register for Trauma & Orthopaedics.

Mr Miranda's practice covers the full range of hand, wrist, elbow and peripheral nerve conditions. These include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Trigger finger
  • Dupuytren's disease
  • De Quervain's tenosynovitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer's elbow
  • Biceps tendon injuries
  • Hand and wrist fractures including scaphoid fractures, wrist ligament injuries, and joint replacement of the thumb, wrist and fingers

He also manages ganglion cysts, osteoarthritis of the hand and wrist, peripheral nerve conditions, and sports injuries affecting the upper limb. His patients include professional and amateur sportspeople, musicians, and manual workers with occupationally related conditions.

Mr Miranda works from a straightforward clinical principle: careful listening and systematic examination resolve the majority of upper limb problems without recourse to extensive investigation. He relies on clinical judgement built over 20 years of specialist practice and investigates where the clinical picture genuinely requires it. Patients consistently report that they feel heard at their consultation and that the diagnosis and management plan are explained to them in plain terms.

He has operated in major trauma centre environments throughout his career, managing complex injuries to the hand and upper limb as part of a multi-disciplinary surgical team. At North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, he joined an established team of hand surgeons in 2019 to develop the hand trauma service further. He has performed well over 12,000 surgical procedures across his career.

Mr Miranda is committed to teaching and professional education. He has given invited talks to medical students, trainee surgeons, general practitioners, and allied health professionals, and holds an active interest in advancing hand surgery education across the region.
