Personal Profile

Dr Sanjay Gupta graduated in Medicine from India in 1987. He completed his MD (Medicine) and Diplomate of National Board (Medicine) in India in 1990 and 1991 respectively. He was awarded MRCP (UK) in 1997. Dr Sanjay Gupta trained in Gastroenterology, initially as Research Registrar at Mayday University Hospital and then as a specialist registrar in the South West London rotation. His research was on surveillance in Barretts Oesophagus. He was awarded CCT in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in 2006, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 2011.

After having worked as a locum Consultant at Mayday Hospital for two years, Dr Gupta was appointed as a substantive Consultant in July 2008. Dr Gupta was appointed as Training Lead for endoscopy later that year. The endoscopy unit at Mayday University Hospital was accredited by JAG and his role as training lead was commended. He has been actively involved in developing policies and protocols in Gastroenterology including developing shared care pathways between primary and secondary care. He was one of the Consultants in the Clostridium difficile management team that successfully reduced the infection rates at Mayday Hospital.

Dr Sanjay Gupta is  part of the on-call rota for Medicine at Croydon University Hospital and is jointly responsible for the gastroenterology patients and specialist gastroenterology referrals at the hospital. He is also the lead for the enteral nutrition team as part of Nutrition Support Team at Croydon  Hospital. Dr Gupta has also been involved in teaching and training of junior doctors nurses and allied health professionals. He has presented talks for patient groups and GPs. He has a number of publications to his credit including presentations at international conferences.

Dr Gupta has experience in managing various gastrointestinal and liver disorders. He is an accomplished endoscopist and performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures-both diagnostic and therapeutic. This includes ERCPs, oesophageal dilatation and stenting, insertion of nasojejunal and nasogastric tubes, PEG insertion and polypectomies.

Since relinquishing his role as training lead for endoscopy he has taken over as the lead for Upper GI cancer and Acute Upper GI Bleed. He does an outpatient clinic at Shirley Oaks Hospital on Thursday evening and an endoscopy list on Wednesday morning. He can be contacted through the secretaries at Shirley Oaks Hospital.

  • Disorders of the gastrointestinal system including the liver, pancreas and bile duct
  • Upper gastro-intestinal system: digestive disorders, acid related disorders, acid reflux, upper abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding from upper GI tract, swallowing problems
  • Small bowel disorders: malabsorption, bleeding
  • Lower GI Tract: diarrhoea, bleeding from back passage (or both), lower abdominal pain, passage of black stools, constipation
  • Hepatobiliary pancreatic: jaundice, pancreatitis, various forms of hepatitis, obstruction of bile duct
  • General symptoms: Weight loss, anaemia, abnormal blood tests, nutritional problems, Irritable bowel like symptoms
  • Oesophageal manometry and pH studies
