Richard’s clinical interests include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and multi-ligament reconstruction, keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery, meniscal and cartilage repair, patellofemoral instability surgery, tibial tubercle osteotomy, corrective osteotomy for malalignment, partial knee replacement, total knee replacement and revision knee arthroplasty. He also treats a wide range of traumatic injuries, including peri-articular fractures around the knee and complex lower-limb fractures. His breadth of experience allows him to manage both straightforward and highly complex cases, helping patients return to the activities and lifestyle that matter most to them.
Richard completed his Trauma and Orthopaedic training in the Severn Deanery, developing broad experience across hip, knee, shoulder, hand, foot and ankle, paediatric, and limb reconstruction surgery. He then undertook two and a half years of advanced fellowship training, including a prestigious soft-tissue knee fellowship in Sheffield and combined knee and trauma fellowships at the Major Trauma Centre in North Bristol. These fellowships provided comprehensive exposure to complex ligament reconstruction, revision knee replacement, cartilage and meniscal surgery, and the management of high-energy trauma. Richard subsequently worked as a locum consultant in West Suffolk, a centre of excellence for partial knee replacement, before returning to the South West as a substantive Consultant Trauma and Knee Surgeon at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.Alongside his clinical practice, Richard has a strong academic background. He holds a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from the University of Cardiff and has published research in areas including arthroplasty, biomechanics, cartilage repair, and trauma surgery. He has presented work nationally and internationally and remains committed to contributing to high-quality research that improves patient care. His engineering background complements his surgical interests, giving him a deeper understanding of implant design, biomechanics, and emerging surgical technologies.
Richard is also passionate about education and training. He has supervised surgical trainees, surgical care practitioners, and engineering students, and he contributes regularly to teaching programmes, courses, and national training initiatives. He is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the British Patellofemoral Society, ensuring he remains engaged with the latest developments in knee surgery.
At the core of Richard’s practice is a focus on personalised, patient-centred care. He believes that understanding a patient’s lifestyle, aspirations, and concerns is essential in choosing the right treatment. Whether managing a sports injury, planning a complex reconstruction, or considering joint preservation or replacement, he works collaboratively with each patient to achieve the best possible outcome.
