About Dr Reza Zadeh

Personal Profile

Dr Zadeh is an interventional and general cardiologist at University Hospitals Sussex. He mainly works at Worthing Hospital, and also performs emergency, life saving heart procedures at The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. He cares for patients with many types of heart problems and is known for his calm, careful, and friendly approach to treatment.

Background and Training

Dr Zadeh has trained in several well known medical centres around the world. He completed his early medical training in Manchester, before travelling to Boston in the USA and Auckland in New Zealand for advanced specialist experience. He graduated from The University of Manchester in 2006 with Honours, which shows he performed at a very high level during his studies.

In 2009, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and in 2020 a fellow of the same royal college (FRCP). This is an important milestone for doctors in the UK and shows strong commitment to specialty, knowledge and clinical skills.

He was awarded a British Heart Foundation (BHF) fellowship, which helped him complete his PhD. His PhD research focused on vascular disease, cholesterol, inflammation and obesity. After this, he continued important research as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University. Harvard is one of the most respected universities in the world, and working there is a major achievement.

When he returned to the UK, he became an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Manchester. In this role, he taught medical students and junior doctors, carried out further research, and continued caring for patients.

He was later awarded a British Cardiac Intervention Society (BCIS) fellowship, which allowed him to train in complex heart procedures at the famous Greenlane Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. The Greenlane Centre is known worldwide for its cutting edge heart work. After completing this training, he worked as a consultant cardiologist in New Zealand before returning to the UK to settle in Sussex, where he now lives and works.

Clinical Expertise

Dr Zadeh provides specialist clinics for anyone experiencing symptoms that may be related to the heart. These can include:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations (feeling like your heart is racing or skipping beats)
  • Dizziness or fainting episodes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart murmurs

He has a special interest in coronary artery disease, which is when the blood vessels supplying the heart become narrowed or blocked. This can lead to serious conditions such as angina and heart attacks.

To investigate and treat these problems, Dr Zadeh performs several advanced procedures. These include:

Angiography and Angioplasty (Stents)
He carries out tests to see how well blood is flowing through the heart’s arteries. If there is a blockage, he can insert a stent, which is a tiny tube used to open the artery and improve blood flow.

Intravascular Imaging (IVUS and OCT)
These are special scanners used inside the blood vessels to give a detailed picture of the artery walls. This helps him decide the best treatment approach.

Pressure Wire Studies and Microvascular Assessment
These tests measure how well blood flows through the heart’s smaller vessels. This helps diagnose complex causes of chest pain that may not show up on regular tests.

Non Invasive Cardiac CT Scans
He also performs heart CT scans to assess a patient’s long term risk of heart problems. He uses these results to help people understand their health and to guide lifestyle changes and treatments that can reduce future risk.

He is passionate about preventing heart disease and helping people lower their chance of future heart events.

Leadership Roles

Dr Zadeh is currently the Clinical Lead (Head of Department) for Cardiology at Worthing Hospital. In this role, he is responsible for leading the cardiology team, improving services, and making sure that patients receive the best care.

In addition to his clinical work, he is also the Deputy Lead for Undergraduate Medicine 303 at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. This means he helps organise teaching, supervise medical students, and examine students during their assessments. He enjoys training future doctors and helping them develop strong, patient focused skills.

Approach to Care

Patients often describe Dr Zadeh as kind, patient, and reassuring. He takes time to listen carefully, explain conditions clearly, and make sure every patient understands their treatment choices. His wide experience, combined with his advanced training and research background, allows him to deliver expert care with a personal touch.

He believes that heart care should be tailored to each patient. He encourages healthy lifestyle changes and works with each person to create a plan that fits their life, goals, and medical needs.
