Mrs Renée Behrens is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, where she has practised since 2008. She specialises in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, fertility care and the management of complex benign gynaecological conditions, and is recognised for her expertise in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery.
Mrs Behrens completed her medical training with honours in 1990 before undertaking extensive postgraduate training in London, including appointments at Hammersmith Hospital and St Mary's Hospital. During this time, she developed a particular interest in fertility and reproductive medicine, spending three years working within the renowned Hammersmith In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Unit.
She was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Research Fellowship and subsequently completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the University of London. Her research focused on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and embryo implantation, areas which continue to inform her clinical practice today.
Mrs Behrens has played a leading role in developing gynaecology services within Hampshire. She was instrumental in introducing laparoscopic hysterectomy and laparoscopic myomectomy procedures at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, helping to expand access to minimally invasive surgery for women across the region. She also established and led the Early Pregnancy Unit for many years, providing specialist care for women experiencing complications in early pregnancy.
Her clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of benign gynaecology, with particular expertise in fertility, endometriosis, menstrual and hormonal disorders, menopause care and recurrent pregnancy loss. She also provides specialist fertility surgery, reversal of sterilisation procedures and paediatric and adolescent gynaecology services.
Alongside her clinical work, Mrs Behrens holds several leadership roles. She is Deputy Clinical Director and Gynaecology Lead at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and serves as Lead Clinician for Gynaecology across the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board, supporting services across four NHS trusts in the South East of England.
Mrs Behrens remains actively involved in clinical research and service development and regularly contributes to regional and national educational meetings. She is passionate about training the next generation of doctors and plays an active role in teaching and mentoring medical professionals.
