Patient Feedback

" After some time waiting for an NHS wrist fusion; I decided to have the surgery privately and saw Mr Mallina at Shirley Oaks Hospital. Mr Mallina recommended a wrist denervation as a better option for me than the fusion. It would be a much less invasive procedure, with a quicker recovery time, and it would leave open the possibility of a fusion in the future. I am so glad I accepted his advice. Less than 2 months on from the surgery, I can undertake heavy work in the garden without needing to wear a splint, the surgery scar has virtually disappeared and I am almost pain-free. I couldn't be happier with the service provided by Mr Mallina and his team at Shirley Oaks Hospital."

" I am really beginning to get much more agility and accuracy in my left hand after releasing the Ulnar nerve compression in my hand. So much so that recently my friends came round and I was able to play a couple of Mozart quartets with them to a good standard. I still have a way to go before I am fully proficient but I am so thrilled that I can play as well as this and that I can enjoy making music again. It was a real landmark.

I cannot thank you enough for your expertise, interest and encouragement which means that I can now look forward to lots of music-making in the future.

You have given me my musical life back..."

"After several years suffering a loss of sensation in my fingers I had a consultation with Mr Mallina at Shirley Oaks hospital. He suggested my loss of sensitivity was due, in part at least, to carpal tunnel restriction and recommended a carpal tunnel release operation. This was duly carried out by Mr Mallina. Throughout the whole process from initial consultation, to operation, to a follow-up consultation, Mr Mallina was patient and thorough in his explanations of the risks as well as of the benefits posed by the procedure. His patient, courteous and friendly manner together with his professionalism would lead me to recommend him to anyone suffering a similar complaint."

- Private Patient at Shirley Oaks Hospital

"I had carpal tunnel surgery by Dr Mallina on both hands. Dr Mallina explained to me in details my options which were open carpal tunnel release or endoscopic carpal tunnel release. I elected the endoscopic surgery because it was less invasive, the hand gets its movement back quicker despite the overall recovery period being the same as the open surgery.

In my opinion the recovery following endoscopic surgery is faster, I was able to do a full fist with some help on the day of the surgery, without help 2 days after whereas with the open surgery it took me 2 weeks to be able to close my hand in a full fist. Overall I regained full movement with 3 days whereas with the open surgery it took me 4 weeks. In terms of strength I had 70% back with endoscopic after 5 days, 90% after 2 weeks, full strength after 5 weeks. Whereas it took me 4 weeks to regain 70% of my strength and 6 weeks for full strength.

The healing of the wound was also faster with endoscopic surgery, approximately 10 days, 5 weeks for the open surgery.

Following my experience, I highly recommend Dr Mallina and the endoscopic surgery for anyone considering carpal tunnel release surgery."
