Personal Profile

Mr Rajkumar Thangaraj is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in lower limb (hips and knee) joint replacement.

Mr Thangaraj has extensive experience in:

  • Primary hip replacement
  • Primary knee replacement
  • Complex hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Revision knee surgery

He also treats a wide range of complex conditions, including:

  • Periprosthetic fractures
  • Joint infections (including infected knee replacements)
  • Failed fracture fixations
  • Non-union of long bone injuries
  • Complex lower limb trauma
He is based at Raigmore Hospital and the National Treatment Centre in Inverness (NHS Highland) since 2022. 

Training and Qualifications

Mr Thangaraj completed his medical degree (MBBS) and Diploma in Orthopaedics in India. He moved to the UK in 2005 and continued his training. His qualifications include:

  • MRCS, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2007)
  • MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering, Cardiff University (2012)
  • FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics), Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2015)
  • He has been on the GMC Specialist Register since 2018.

Mr Thangaraj has completed several prestigious fellowships, including:

  • Lower limb arthroplasty fellowship at the renowned Prof. John Charnley Unit, Wrightington Hospital (2016)
  • Worked as fellow in Paediatric Orthopaedics i at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (2018)
  • Major trauma fellowship at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool (2018)

During his training, he also gained international experience in Innsbruck, Austria, working under Professor Blauth.

He has previously worked as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2018 at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust (Stevenage), Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and NHS Lanarkshire.

Teaching and Education

Mr Thangaraj is passionate about teaching and training future surgeons. Has previously been faculty on Wrightington FRCS courses. He is one of the Directors of Highland Orthopaedic Courses Ltd
He also organises orthopaedic teaching sessions for trainees in NHS Highland

He is also interested in research and audit and is involved in multiple publications in peer review journals and multiple audits throughout his career.

  • Periprosthetic fracture management (fractures of bone around hip and knee replacement components)
  • Hybrid and cemented primary hip replacements
  • Cemented knee replacement
  • Complex primary knee replacement requiring reconstruction of the knee
  • Single and two stage revision knee replacements for failed knee replacements due to loosening of components
  • Instability of knee following knee replacement
  • Periprosthetic joint infection
