He became a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons in 1998 following completion of his junior surgical training. He went on to pursue his interest in research and undertook a clinical trial of a new medicine that improved wound healing. He was awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree at University College London for this thesis in 1999. His work was published in medical journals in the United States.
Mr Uppal has worked in teaching hospitals in London including Guys and St Thomas' Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and St George's Hospital. He has been fortunate to work with many leading surgeons in the UK, US and Europe. He was made a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery FRCS(Plast) as a result of his experience and work. Mr Uppal has spent three months living and working in Belgium to further specialise in his sub specialty interest of Breast Cancer Reconstruction. He has travelled to meetings in France, Belgium, Italy and the US to keep up to date with the latest techniques and continues to do so.
Mr Uppal is a regular lecturer at the Royal College of Radiologists in Sentinel node biopsy for malignant melanoma. He helped to develop a new technique using ultrasound measurement of node depth for patients with melanoma. He has published this technique in the European Journal of Plastic Surgery. He also lectures at the Hellenic Centre and Thames Valley University. Mr Uppal is an Examiner for the Surgical Membership examinations at the Royal College of Surgeons and is involved with training junior surgeons.
