He has been working as a NHS consultant surgeon based at Russells Hall hospital since 1998 and on a private basis at The Priory Hospital. He has carried out research into cytokines and adhesion molecules in ulcerative colitis and sepsis and was awarded an MD by the University of Birmingham in 1995.
He has a broad range of publications both research and clinical papers in colorectal disorders having been awarded several prizes, research bursaries and travel scholarships. He is also a reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery and an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England Rajan Patel has been instrumental in setting up laparoscopic colorectal and hernia surgery and the enhanced recovery programme at Russells Hall Hospital. This programme enables faster recovery with less pain.
He currently offers comprehensive management of bowel disorders including rectal pain,rectal bleeding, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, anal pain, anaemia, faecal incontinence and irritable bowel syndrome. Procedures performed include colonoscopy, gastroscopy, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, colonoscopy, operations for colon cancer, rectal cancer, anal fistula, anal fissure, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and diverticular disease. Also most general surgical procedures including laparoscopic TEP inguinal hernia, incisional hernia repair, pilonidal sinus, cholecystectomy, varicose vein, EVLT and Vein wave treatment are available.
Mr Rajan Patel also performs the THD procedure for haemorrhoids which are both virtually pain free.
