Peter Thompson Personal Profile

Mr Peter Thompson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in knee surgery and sports injuries of the lower limb. His NHS practice is at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire and his private practice is based in Warwickshire.

Peter graduated from Birmingham Medical School in 1992 and after completing medical and surgical house jobs in Birmingham and Worcester spent 15 months working as a junior doctor in Australia before returning to London to concentrate on surgical training.   

After completing the North West Thames specialist orthopaedic and trauma rotation in London, including training at St Mary’s Hospital and the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, Peter spent a six month fellowship in Australia in 2004 concentrating on knee and sports surgery.   

Peter started his consultant post at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire in April 2005 and wasClinical Director of the orthopaedic department from April 2011-15 being responsible for leading the large team of orthopaedic surgeons who work there.

Peter's interests cover all areas of knee surgery from sports injuries to revision knee replacement and he has links with a number of professional sports teams within the UK including premiership rugby.

Peter is dedicated to the surgical training of undergraduate medical students at Warwick University, junior doctors and specialist orthopaedic registrars.  He teaches regularly on national and international courses.

Peter is married to Sally who trained as a GP and now runs his private practice.  He has two children.  Interests outside of work include competing in triathlon events, cycling, running and skiing.

Peter Thompson Clinical Interests

My elective practice covers all areas of knee surgery from arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to revision knee replacement. This includes treatment for meniscal tears, ligament reconstruction, cartilage repair surgery, realignment osteotomy and multi-ligament reconstructions, as well as partial and total knee replacement.
