Mr. Paul Pavlou is a Specialist Consultant Knee Surgeon with expertise in diagnosing and treating knee conditions for patients of all ages. He provides comprehensive care for individuals with arthritis-related knee pain, sports injuries, and other knee disorders. His approach focuses on careful assessment, advanced imaging, and personalised treatment plans, prioritising non-surgical options whenever possible.
While many of his patients do not require surgery, Mr. Pavlou ensures they receive clear and accurate information about their condition. He works closely with a team of expert physiotherapists to deliver the highest standard of care. When surgery is necessary, he utilises proven and safe techniques, staying at the forefront of knee surgery advancements. He specialises in partial knee replacements, sometimes referred to as sports knee replacement or knee resurfacing.
A strong advocate for sports injury recovery, Mr. Pavlou is committed to helping athletes and active individuals return to the activities they love. Having personally experienced orthopaedic injuries, he understands the challenges of rehabilitation and recovery.
Education & Career
Mr. Pavlou was educated at Highgate School in London before completing his medical degree at Imperial College London, where he also obtained an additional qualification in medical management. His early surgical training took place in Poole, Bournemouth, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, before being appointed to the Wessex Orthopaedic Specialist Training rotation.
To further refine his expertise, he completed a specialist fellowship in knee and hip surgery at a leading orthopaedic centre in Auckland. He later worked as a Quality Improvement Consultant and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust before returning to the South Coast.
Currently, Mr. Pavlou’s NHS practice is based at University Hospitals Dorset (Poole and Bournemouth), where he specialises in complex knee surgery. He also serves as the Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Research & Teaching
Mr. Pavlou has presented his award-winning research at national and international conferences and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has also co-authored chapters in leading orthopaedic surgery textbooks and frequently reviews scientific papers for The Bone & Joint Journal.
As one of a select few surgeons worldwide to have received two Knee Society Awards from the Knee Society of America, Mr. Pavlou is actively involved in training both UK and international surgeons in advanced knee surgery techniques.
Personal Life
Mr. Pavlou is married to Emma, a local GP, and they have two young sons. Outside of his medical career, he is a classically trained guitarist and enjoys photography. He is also passionate about water and endurance sports, including windsurfing, kite-surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, open water swimming, and cycling.
Having personally experienced orthopaedic injuries, he has a deep understanding of what it takes to recover and return to full activity after surgery.
