About Paul Charlesworth

Personal Profile

Mr Charlesworth is a highly experienced Consultant Paediatric Surgeon with over two decades dedicated to paediatric surgery. He completed his medical degree at The Royal London School of Medicine & Dentistry (MBBS) in 2001. He began his training in Paediatric Surgery in 2004 before taking a dedicated year of research. For this MSc in Surgical Sciences he was awarded a distinction. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Paeds) and on the GMC specialist register for Paediatric Surgery. Mr Charlesworth has undertaken extensive training in some of the world’s most prestigious hospitals including Great Ormond Street, Kings College Hospital, St Batholomew’s & The Royal London Hospital, Manchester Children’s Hospital, The Royal Victoria Belfast and Brighton University Hospital. He was awarded the coveted Worshipful Society of Cutlers Fellowship in Surgery, completing a year of focused and highly specialised laparoscopic surgery in children.

Mr Charlesworth is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at The Royal London Hospital and has a wealth and depth of experience from working in a busy and highly specialised unit, bringing vast expertise in managing children with surgical needs.

Specialist Interest & Practice

Mr Charlesworth is internationally recognised for his work in laparoscopic (key hole) surgery and has served on the executive board of BAPES (British Association of Paediatric Endoscopic Surgeons) since 2019. He has pioneered the national gold standard pathway for the management of paediatric and adolescent Breast Pathology. Surgical Conditions he manages include:

  • General surgery of childhood: undescended testis, phimosis (need for a circumcision), inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, tongue tie, skin lesions (pre-auricular skin tag, extra digits, brachial sinus tracts, pilomatrixoma), appendicectomy, pyloric stenosis, Meckel’s Diverticulum, Urachal remnant, non-healing umbilicus, in-growing toe nails.
  • Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgery: Gall Stones (laparoscopic cholecystectomy), achalasia, Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux (need for fundoplication), feeding tube placement and exchange (PEGs/ PEGJs), surgery for short bowel syndrome
  • Lower Gastro-Intestinal Surgery: Constipation, Hirschsprung’s Disease, anorectal malformation, perianal skin tags/abscess, haemorrhoids, surgery for inflammatory Bowel Disease.
  • Specialist adolescent breast surgery: Fibroadenoma excision
  • Neonatal Surgery: Oesophageal atresia, necrotising enterocolitis, abdominal wall defects (exomphalos, gastroschisis), congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia

Academic Contributions

Mr Charlesworth is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Barts & The London School of medicine and is Educational Supervisor to national trainees in Paediatric Surgery. With over 50 international presentations and 40 peer reviewed publications he is a respected contributor to the field of Paediatric Surgery

Personal Interests

Outside of medicine Mr Charlesworth is a dedicated father to four children and has leaned as much though being a parent to understand the needs and care required to children and their parents needing surgery as through being a surgeon himself. He is passionate about sport having competed at international level representing his country in both sailing and Ironman triathlon.

Clinical Interests

General surgery of childhood: Undescended testis, phimosis (need for circumcision) Inguinal Hernia, umbilical hernia hydrocele, tongue-tie (under 3-months of age this can be divided in the clinic), Skin lesions requiring excision (pre auricular skin tag, extra digits, pilomatrixoma), In-growing toe-nails.

Upper GI practice: Gall stones, Achalasia, Gastro-Oesophageal reflux (not responding to medical management), placement and replacement of feeding tubes such as gastrostomies and jejunal feeding.

Lower GI Pathology: constipation, Hirschsprung’s Disease, Anorectal malformation, haemorrhoids, peri-anal abscess, surgery for inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Specialist adolescent breast surgeon (fibroadenoma excision).

Neonatal Specialist Practice: Oesophageal atresia, Necrotizing enterocolitis, Anorectal malformation, abdominal wall defects (gastroschisis & exomphalos) Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.
