Personal Profile

Dr Parijat De is a Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine with specialist interest in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Lipid Metabolism in City Hospital, Birmingham since 2003.

He has set up nurse-led diabetic renal review clinics in the Birmingham area. He is involved in the research and projects for Diabetic Nephropathy. He has also set up various community based diabetes clinics in Birmingham, which are amongst the first in the country.

He has been the Trust Clinical Governance Lead (2006-2010) and Royal College Tutor (2010-2014). As Clinical Lead in Diabetes & Endocrinology, Parijat has influenced numerous changes both within the Trust & nationally. He has led the in-patient diabetes team, as a THINK GLUCOSE Lead and Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, setting up “Whole Systems Approach to Improving Diabetes Safety in Hospital” and “DIABETES SAFE ACCREDITED WARDS” – these have led to significant reductions in medication errors and LOS with national recognition (HSJ, PSCA award finalist 2016, BMJ awards finalist 2018). 
 
He has led from the forefront working tirelessly with the CCG to develop and expand the successful & multiple national award-winning Diabetes Integrated Community Service (DICE) project in 89 CCG GP practices, delivering care closer to home & upskilling Primary Care with excellent GP/Patient satisfaction and cost savings of over half a million. For his DICE/In-Patient work, he was voted national Diabetes Healthcare Professional of the Year Quality in Care award 2016.
 
His contribution in the wider context of NHS has placed his Trust at the national forefront through his involvement and advisory work with national bodies like DUK, RCP, GMC, CQC, ABCD & JBDS. He is a NICE invited expert & has facilitated 7 national guidelines (2017-2019). 

Dr Parijat De is an experienced General Physician and participates in the day to day ward based care of his medical patients as well as participates in medicine on-call and deals with acute medical emergencies. He has a wide interest and expertise in all aspects of Diabetes, especially in the field of Metabolic Medicine and Diabetes Renal disease. His special interest in Diabetes is Metabolic Syndrome as well as the growing problem of obesity including new oral and injectable therapies for weight loss (Saxenda).

Diabetes: All aspects of diabetes including Insulin treatments, diabetic kidney disease, Obesity/lipids/hypertension, New therapies for Type diabetes, all Type 1 diabetes including young adolescents and Insulin Pump therapy, Erectile dysfunction in diabetes.
General Medicine: All aspects of General Medicine including in-patient assessment and treatment of all common ailments like pneumonia, heart failure, stroke, cardiac & gastro-intestinal disease, management of hypertension, lipid disorders, kidney failure and heart problems, neurological disorder assessment and investigations including falls, confusion, syncope, dizziness and weakness.
