In addition to this high volume and highly specialised practice, he is experienced in general cranial and spinal neurosurgery. In 2015, he won the prestigious Norman Dott Gold Medal for the most outstanding performance amongst graduating Neurosurgeons in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Professor Pathmanaban holds a number of national positions within the profession. He is co-lead for skull base surgery on the academic committee of The Society of British Neurological Surgeons, serves on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Pituitary Foundation, is Neurosurgical Expert to the NHS England proton beam therapy panel and sits on the council of The Royal Society of Medicine Clinical Neurosciences section.
His NHS practice is as Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences, which is the UK's highest volume neurosurgery centre of excellence. He is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Manchester and Strategic Development Lead at the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre. He trained under the tutelage of world leading experts in London, Manchester, Oxford and Toronto and was the Marjorie Newsome Visiting Fellow at the renowned Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, USA.
Professor Pathmanaban is group leader of the Surgical Neuro-Oncology Manchester Laboratory (SNOMan). His research focuses on genes and immune cells in tumours affecting the deepest reaches of the brain and cranial nerves, called the skull base. His research won first prize at the European Skull Base Society Congress in 2016 in Berlin, Germany. He also collaborates widely on team science projects related to inflammation in the brain, which has implications for diagnosis and treatment of brain injury and neurodegenerative conditions. He is a widely published author in peer-reviewed scientific magazines and books.
