Mr Ogho Obakponovwe MBE is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon who sees patients at Goring Hall Hospital in Worthing, serving individuals across Worthing, Pulborough, Horsham and the wider West Sussex area. He specialises in treating conditions of the hip and knee, as well as sports injuries and complex joint problems. His work includes both primary joint replacements and more advanced revision surgery. He uses modern surgical techniques, including arthroscopic (keyhole) procedures, to support faster recovery and reduced discomfort.

Education and Early Training
Mr Obakponovwe studied medicine at the University of Leicester, graduating in 2005. He then completed his foundation training, gaining a broad understanding of hospital medicine and surgery.

In 2007, he moved to Leeds to continue his surgical training at the Yorkshire School of Surgery, based at Leeds General Infirmary. This is one of the UK’s most respected training centres. During this time, he developed a strong interest in orthopaedics. He gained early exposure to complex trauma cases and was mentored by Professor P. V. Giannoudis MBE, a leading figure in orthopaedic trauma surgery.

In 2010, he began a postgraduate degree in clinical research at the University of Leeds. His research focused on fractures around the knee, including those linked to joint replacements and osteoporosis. He completed a clinical trial and wrote a detailed thesis. In 2015, he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) for this work.

Specialist Training and Fellowships
Mr Obakponovwe completed his specialist orthopaedic training at the Royal London Hospital. This programme gave him wide experience in both standard and complex orthopaedic conditions. In

2019, he was added to the UK Specialist Register, which confirms his qualification to practise as a consultant.

To build further expertise, he completed two advanced fellowships in hip and knee surgery at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, one of the busiest joint replacement centres in the UK. During this time, he trained under Professor Rob Middleton and Professor Adrian Harvey.

He gained advanced skills in:

  • Hip and knee joint replacements
  • Complex and revision surgery
  • Robotic-assisted joint procedures

This specialist training allows him to confidently treat both routine and more challenging cases.

Consultant Role
Mr Obakponovwe was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in 2020. Alongside his NHS role, he offers private consultations and treatment at Goring Hall Hospital in Worthing, providing convenient access for patients across West Sussex.

Charity and Global Health Work
He is the co-founder and chair of The Peter Claver Foundation, a charity dedicated to reducing health inequalities in developing countries. The foundation supports healthcare systems in regions such as Delta State, Nigeria.

Through this work, he helps provide vital medical support and training in underserved communities. This demonstrates his commitment to making a positive difference beyond his work at Goring Hall Hospital and within West Sussex.

Outside of his clinical work, Mr Obakponovwe enjoys an active lifestyle. He is married and has two sons.

He has a strong passion for sport. Earlier in his life, he was a successful amateur boxer and became a two-time London heavyweight champion. He remains involved with grassroots boxing and continues to support local clubs.

He also played football during medical school and now plays masters football with the British Medical Football Team.

To stay fit, he enjoys regular exercise and short-distance running. He also takes part in a range of outdoor activities, including:

  • Kitesurfing

He enjoys travelling and has visited over 45 countries, gaining a wide experience of different cultures.
