Dr Mulla has undergone training in world renowned centres of excellence and has completed an advanced pain fellowship at the Guy’s and St. Thomas’ University Hospital affiliated to King’s College London School of Medicine. He worked as a Consultant in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge and St. George’s University Hospital, and has also worked in General Medicine which enhances his scope of practice.
Dr Mulla has extensive experience in the multidisciplinary management of pain conditions, the prevalence of which is over 40% in the UK population. His clinical approach is holistic and based upon a bio-psycho-social model that facilitates functional independence and emotional well-being offered in a compassionate environment.
He has extensive experience in the multidisciplinary management of pain conditions and is highly qualified in the modern and advanced techniques of pain management. He consults more than 1000 patients every year and has special expertise in management of complex pain conditions.
He is an expert in treating common conditions including but not limited to degenerative and arthritic conditions, neck and low back pain, joint pain, sciatica/lumbago, slipped spinal discs, whiplash and sports injuries. His other areas of expertise include cancer pain, headaches and facial pain, migraine, persistent post-surgical pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain and pelvic pain among others.
His consultation involves a comprehensive assessment and a detailed clinical examination as well as formulation of a diagnosis along with an extensive range of treatments for painful conditions where surgery is neither necessary nor preferred. He works closely with a team of multidisciplinary specialists to create a personalised care and treatment plan for patients with complex needs.
Dr Mulla provides medication management and a wide range of interventions (injection therapy) such as lumbar and cervical epidural injections, facet joint injections, medial branch blocks, sacro-iliac joint injections, hip, knee/other joint injections, nerve root blocks, trigger point injections, occipital nerve blocks and other injection therapies. He has special expertise in ultrasound guided pain procedures, peripheral nerve stimulation and radiofrequency denervation/ablation.
In addition to his clinical work Dr Mulla regularly presents scientific papers and gives lectures nationally and internationally on various subjects. He contributes to journals and medical textbooks on a regular basis and is an expert speaker at the local clinical commissioning groups and hospital clinical governance meetings. Furthermore he is the royal college tutor for pain education supervision within the region.
As the Clinical Lead for the Integrated Pain Service at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, Dr Mulla is in charge of overseeing the functioning of the service and conducting and supervising clinical audit and research along with quality assurance and service development.
