About Dr Nick Barnes

Personal Profile

Dr Barnes began his medical training in 1989 at Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, qualifying as a doctor in 1995 with distinction. He then completed specialist paediatric training in London, holding posts at several leading centres including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Royal Brompton Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

In 2000 he transferred to the Oxford region, where he spent a further six years in specialist training in preparation for consultancy. During this period, he worked for four years at John Radcliffe Hospital across paediatric cardiology, neonatal intensive care, paediatric respiratory medicine, and paediatric intensive care.

He was appointed an NHS Consultant Paediatrician in 2006, joining Northampton General Hospital. He is now Lead Consultant for neonatal care and cardiology, while also caring for children across the full age range - from extremely premature newborns to young people approaching adult life. He regularly supervises acute and emergency general paediatric care within a Paediatric Assessment Unit, assessing children referred urgently by GPs.

Dr Barnes has been established in private practice since 2012. At a child’s first clinic appointment he undertakes a comprehensive review of health and development, placing their current symptoms in the widest possible context, considering all medical, social, and psychological factors that may be relevant. He works within a bespoke multidisciplinary team, including a dietitian, physiotherapist, and psychologist, developing a coordinated and comprehensive management plan when needed.

Dr Barnes also seeks regular feedback on patient and parent experience (for example via Doctify.com), and continually evolves his practice to deliver modern, evidence-based care while remaining mindful of parental expectations.
