Training and Appointment

Professor Siddiqi graduated in 2003. He completed his postgraduate training in Yorkshire before undertaking higher surgical training (CCT) in the Wessex Deanery. 

During this time, he trained in leading colorectal units in Basingstoke, Southampton and Portsmouth. He also completed specialist training in advanced robotic colorectal surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, before joining Poole Hospital.

Following completion of his training, he undertook a post-CCT fellowship in advanced robotic colorectal surgery at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques.

Professor Siddiqi has extensive experience in both colorectal and general surgery. 

He specialises in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery for a wide range of benign and malignant colorectal conditions, including bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He also manages a broad range of general surgical and coloproctology conditions. 

His approach combines specialist expertise with evidence-based practice and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality patient care. He works closely with patients to ensure they fully understand their diagnosis and treatment options and supports them throughout every stage of their treatment journey.

Research and Academic Interests

Professor Siddiqi has an active interest in colorectal cancer research, surgical education, surgical technology and quality improvement. His academic work focuses on advancing surgical practice through research, innovation and education.

A key area of his current research is the use of artificial intelligence in surgery and surgical training. He is particularly interested in how AI can support surgical skills assessment, enhance education and training, improve performance evaluation surgical performance and contribute to better decision-making and patient outcomes.

His research interests also include the role of technology in improving the quality of colorectal cancer care and translation of research findings into practical improvements for patients and healthcare professionals.

Professor Siddiqi was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Portsmouth for his research, Testing the Utility of Biomarkers in Detecting Micrometastasis in Colorectal Cancer. 

He has authored more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and presented over 60 papers at national and international scientific meetings.

Through his research and academic work, he aims to support the development of innovative and evidence-based approaches to surgery, training and healthcare improvement.

Surgical Education and Leadership

Professor Siddiqi is actively involved in postgraduate surgical education and training. 

He has contributed to national and international masterclasses in laparoscopic and robotic surgery and serves as faculty member for courses organised by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI).

He is committed to supporting the training and development of both consultant surgeons and surgical trainees.
