About Mr Kishan Gokaraju

Personal Profile

Mr Gokaraju is an award-winning UK-trained consultant surgeon working in trauma and orthopaedics and specialising in upper limb conditions, from shoulder to finger-tip. He deals with both trauma and elective disorders affecting the arm, with his NHS practice based within the world-renowned King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London.

He was born in Greater Manchester and grew up in West Yorkshire prior to graduating from Sheffield Medical School with dual-qualification of Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) and Bachelor in Medical Science (BMedSci) degrees. He moved to the capital for basic surgical training before completing his higher trauma and orthopaedic training on London’s prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore) registrar programme. This included NHS posts working in the high-profile orthopaedic departments of the Royal Free and Royal London Hospitals.

He is triple fellowship-trained, completing specialist upper limb programmes at internationally renowned level-1 trauma centres in Brisbane, Sheffield and Coventry, attaining significant expertise managing both trauma and elective conditions of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. In addition to this, he has learnt cutting-edge techniques from visits to centres of excellence in shoulder and elbow surgery, in North America, Europe and around the UK.

Along this journey, he has been actively involved in research focused towards helping patients with general orthopaedic and specialist upper limb problems. His achievements include having a number of these projects published in high-impact orthopaedic journals as well as around 50 national and international presentations for his work. His primary focus is in educating colleagues and the next generations of surgeons in his surgical field. He founded, organises and co-convenes his own upper limb resident-doctor training course, as well as teaching on a number of nationally recognised courses. He is also part of a group who co-organises and runs the London Orthopaedic Meeting, an annual national conference for education within the orthopaedic surgical specialty.

Prizes he has received include those for his research as well as travelling fellowship awards from the British Elbow & Shoulder Society, the British Orthopaedic Association, the Royal Society of Medicine and the Watanabe (shoulder arthroscopy) Club.

He has been working in London as a consultant surgeon since fellowships and in this role has become well-known for his calm and reassuring manner with patients. He takes a custom and tailored approach to patient care, expertly utilising both surgical and non-operative evidence-based modalities to treat his patients, as appropriate, to achieve the highest outcomes. He competently manages upper limb trauma and elective conditions with the aim of restoring function and lifestyle as best as possible. Operatively, he engages in evidence-based up-to-date arthroscopic, minimally-invasive and open techniques, including shoulder replacement surgery, to help his patients achieve a successful recovery.

Clinical Interests

Mr Gokaraju completed 3 internationally-renowned specialist upper limb fellowships prior to becoming a consultant. These included working at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane Australia, the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield and the University Hospital Coventry, all level-1 major trauma centres. The experience gained in these posts included dealing with complex injuries and elective conditions of the arm from shoulder to fingertip.

Stemming from this, he has gained significant expertise in managing these often-difficult clinical problems and been able to utilise this effectively in managing his patient cohort in London and Kent. The patients he treats includes those ranging from healthy active adults to a population with varying health issues. The techniques and innovative new technologies utilised enables him to achieve excellent outcomes in all of these patient groups.

Mr Gokaraju feels care should be customised to each and every patient. He treats bone, ligament, tendon and nerve conditions and offers both non-operative modalities and surgical options in a tailored approach, depending on what is required to achieve a fast, effective and safe recovery. Operatively, he offers a multitude of treatments, including injections, key-hole surgery, minimally-invasive and open procedures.

In the shoulder this includes anatomic and reverse geometry replacements and arthroscopically, he performs rotator cuff repairs, joint stabilisations, subacromial decompressions and acromio-clavicular joint clear-outs for arthritis. He also offers open stabilisations in the form of the Latarjet procedure for complex shoulder instability, resulting from problems with the bone or in competitive contact athletes. For the elbow joint, he offers arthroscopy and open procedures, the latter including fracture fixation, ligament repairs, biceps and triceps tendon repairs and nerve releases. In the wrist and hand, similarly his repertoire comprises managing fractures, ligament and tendon injuries and nerve problems, all including carpal tunnel decompressions, trigger finger releases and Dupuytren’s surgery.
