Consultant Gynaecologist

About Mr Michael Negus

Personal Profile

Mr Michael Negus was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at The Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in 2021.

He has developed the provision of laparoscopic and open Urogynaecological surgery alongside the already established vaginal route.  In his current role he manages most benign gynaecological conditions with specific interest in Urogynaecology and Benign Gynaecology.  Within these subspecialty areas of Gynaecology, Mike provides outstanding care managing pelvic organ prolapse, stress incontinence, urinary urgency and urge incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, painful bladder syndrome, menstrual disorders, and chronic pelvic pain.

Mike completed medical training in 2010 before carrying out further extensive Obstetrics and Gynaecology postgraduate training in the Wessex deanery.  In addition to this training, he has completed a fellowship for research into recurrent urinary tract infections and stress urinary incontinence.  Mike has presented this research internationally and the data from this research has been published nationally.

In the NHS Mike has developed and delivered the provision of outpatient clinic services for Urogynaecological and benign Gynaecological conditions, performing outpatient cystoscopy and hysteroscopy. Whilst doing so he performs outpatient procedures such as bladder neck injections, Botox injections, glycosaminoglycan layer replacements, endometrial polyp/fibroid resection, endometrial ablation, and insertion/retrieval of Mirena coils.

Alongside his clinical expertise, Mike has shown a continued passion for developing conservative strategies that provide patients with the tools to improve and cure their symptoms before resorting to medical treatments and surgery.  To that end he has driven forward the SPEAR clinic within Hampshire hospital foundation trust. This clinic provides patients with the combined expertise of Mike (Consultant Urogynaecologist) a pelvic floor physiotherapist, the trust Urogynaecology clinical nurse specialist and dietician in a one-stop clinic environment.

As part of his NHS role Mike is the Trust Obstetric lead for NHS Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) and provides high risk Antenatal care. As such he will offer the Harmony (non-invasive prenatal) Test and its interpretation.

In addition, Mike is the Obstetrics and Gynaecology lead for medical student education at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.  He takes huge pride in this involvement of training the next generation of doctors.
