Dr. Mike Mendall graduated with a distinction from Cambridge University and Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1985. He was named as one of Tatler's top private gastroenterologists in 2013, he completed his specialist training in gastroenterology at St. George's in South West London. With extensive experience in the field, Dr. Mendall is often sought after for second opinions on complex cases.
He is an expert interventional endoscopist having performed more than 10000 colonoscopies, 10000 upper GI endoscopies and 3000 ERCPs as well as a large number of other endoscopic procedures. These include emergency endoscopy for uncontrolled gastrointestinal bleeding, stenting to relieve obstructions of the oesophagus and gut, videocapsule endoscopy, double balloon enteroscopy and oesophageal physiology studies.
Practice
Dr Mendall currently practices at Shirley Oaks Hospital where he has two face to face clinics on Mondays and Thursdays and one telephone clinic per week. He provides zoom consultations to international patients and patients from other parts of the UK. At the hospital, he performs endoscopy, including upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy), colonoscopy, oesophageal pH recording and videocapsule endoscopy.
His main NHS base is Croydon University Hospital where he was lead clinician for gastroenterology until recently which delivers 12000 endoscopies per year. He leads the Inflammatory Bowel Disease service which serves 1700 patients.
His main interests include dyspepsia, oesophageal reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and Helicobacter pylori, on which he is an international authority. He is also interested in irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, and both upper and lower GI cancers. Dr. Mendall is passionate about practicing gastroenterology holistically, recognising that gut disorders often serve as early warnings of issues developing silently in other parts of the body.
Research
Dr Mendall has always had a strong research focus and remains actively involved, presenting at and attending many international meetings. He has made important and original contributions in a number of different areas of gastroenterology including dyspepsia, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel as well as in coronary heart disease.
He has more than 100 publications many in prestigious journals including the Lancet, British Medical Journal, Gastroenterology, Gut and the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
Committees
He has served on the British Society of Gastroenterology Clinical Services committee, the Upper GI Cancer London Cancer Alliance board, the National Cancer Intelligence Network Upper GI Cancer committee, and the South West London Gastroenterology Training Committee. He has also served on a variety of hospital committees.
Dr. Mendall has travelled extensively and during university was a member of the Cambridge Travellers and Explorers Club. In 1981, he led an expedition to the Indian Himalayas, where he lived and studied in a remote village. The village was a five days' journey from the nearest road, situated high on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. He has also crossed the Algerian Sahara to explore the Hoggar Mountains, travelled around central Africa, including a visit to the recently erupted Nyamuragira volcano near Goma, and travelled through Mongolia.
Personal life
Presently, he enjoys cycling, tennis and golf. He also enjoys spending time with his family and his dog, and is currently learning to play the guitar.
