Mr Farndon is a highly experienced Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in lower limb conditions. He is based at The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate, where he serves as Clinical Chair and is a member of the Medical Advisory Committee. His practice encompasses a wide range of orthopaedic treatments, with particular expertise in foot and ankle surgery and a secondary specialism in knee surgery.
Appointed as a Consultant in 2010, Mr Farndon has developed a busy and well-regarded NHS practice at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. Over the years, he has held several senior leadership roles within the Trust, including Governance Lead and Clinical Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics. His commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety has been recognised through these roles, and he continues to play an active part in shaping orthopaedic services both locally and regionally.
Mr Farndon has undertaken advanced specialist fellowships in both Foot and Ankle Surgery and Knee Surgery, which have equipped him with a deep understanding of complex lower limb conditions. His clinical interests include sports injuries, degenerative joint disease, trauma, and reconstructive surgery. He works closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists, podiatrists, orthotists, and other surgical colleagues, to ensure patients receive comprehensive and coordinated care. He also collaborates with professional sports teams and regularly treats both amateur and elite athletes, including adolescents and adults.
A strong advocate for patient-centred care, Mr Farndon is known for his clear and compassionate communication style. He believes that providing high-quality clinical information in an understandable and accessible way is essential to empowering patients to make informed decisions about their treatment. His consultations are thorough and tailored to each individual, with a focus on exploring all available options and ensuring patients feel confident and supported throughout their care journey.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Farndon has a longstanding interest in medical education and training. His teaching career began at Newcastle University, where he worked as a Demonstrator in Anatomy and Clinical Skills. Since then, he has contributed extensively to postgraduate training, including teaching on Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS) courses and serving as an ATLS Instructor. He has also been invited to teach on pitch-side emergency care courses for major sporting organisations such as the Rugby Football Union (Immediate Care in Sport) and the Football Association (AREA), reflecting his expertise in sports-related trauma and emergency response.
Mr Farndon has played a key role in surgical education within the region, having served as Sector Tutor for Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training. In this capacity, he represented Harrogate on the Regional Surgical Training Committee and was responsible for organising the Annual Regional Mock FRCS (Tr&Orth) examinations, which help prepare senior trainees for their final consultant-level assessments. His dedication to teaching was recognised when he was voted Trainer of the Year in 2022. He continues to act as both Educational and Clinical Supervisor to junior doctors and regularly teaches on local, national, and international instructional courses.
Outside of his professional life, Mr Farndon leads an active and well-balanced lifestyle. He enjoys cycling, running, and participating in triathlons, as well as snowboarding during the winter months. He is passionate about cooking and values quality time spent with his family. A keen sports enthusiast, he enjoys watching live events and has recently taken up playing Padel, a fast-growing racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and squash.
Mr Farndon’s combination of clinical expertise, dedication to education, and commitment to patient care makes him a valued member of the team at The Duchy Hospital and a trusted specialist for patients seeking orthopaedic treatment in Harrogate and the surrounding areas.
