Dr Louy Ghazal is a consultant musculoskeletal (MSK) radiologist with extensive experience in diagnostic imaging, ultrasound-guided intervention and sports imaging. His career spans more than two decades, combining the disciplines of physiotherapy, orthopaedic surgery and radiology, allowing him to approach musculoskeletal problems with a rare depth of clinical understanding.
After qualifying as a physiotherapist in 2001, Dr Ghazal went on to study medicine at the University of Dundee, graduating in 2006. He completed core surgical and postgraduate orthopaedic training, gaining hands-on experience in the management of trauma and joint disease before deciding to specialise in radiology. His surgical and physiotherapy background gives him a unique perspective when interpreting imaging and planning image-guided procedures.
Dr Ghazal completed his specialist radiology training within the Severn Deanery, followed by two highly competitive post-CCT fellowships in musculoskeletal radiology — the first at the world-renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, and the second at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital Spinal Centre. These fellowships provided advanced exposure to MSK MRI and CT interpretation, image-guided spinal intervention and complex sports injury imaging.
Since 2019, Dr Ghazal has been a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads on trauma radiology and provides daily MSK reporting and interventional services. He is actively involved in the training of sonographers and radiology registrars in MSK ultrasound and intervention, reflecting his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of clinical education and skill development within the department.
Across both his NHS and private practice, Dr Ghazal performs thousands of ultrasound-guided procedures each year, covering all major joints and soft tissue structures. His procedural expertise includes platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, Arthrosamid® viscosupplementation for knee osteoarthritis, hydro-dilatation for frozen shoulder, barbotage for calcific tendinitis, trigger finger release, ganglion cyst removal, foreign body extraction and dry needling.
In addition to interventional work, Dr Ghazal provides expert interpretation of MRI, CT and ultrasound studies across the full spectrum of musculoskeletal pathology - including tendon and ligament injuries, cartilage and labral tears, stress reactions, bone marrow oedema and post-operative imaging. His reports are valued for their clarity, precision and practical guidance, helping clinicians and patients make confident management decisions. Known for his gentle, patient-focused approach, Dr Ghazal takes particular care to ensure procedures are comfortable and reassuring for patients who may be anxious about intervention. Many comment that their experience was far more pleasant than expected, owing to his calm manner and skilful technique. Dr Ghazal also offers imaging consultations and second-opinion reviews, where patients can discuss their scan findings directly with a radiologist before committing to surgery or other major treatments. This service bridges the gap between imaging and patient understanding, helping individuals make fully informed choices about their care. He continues to expand his clinical practice through ongoing professional development, with a consistent focus on precision, safety and the highest quality of patient care.
Dr Louy Ghazal’s clinical interests cover the full range of musculoskeletal imaging and intervention, with a particular focus on ultrasound-guided procedures, sports imaging and diagnostic accuracy in complex musculoskeletal conditions.
He has extensive experience performing minimally invasive ultrasound-guided treatments, offering patients effective, low-risk solutions that often prevent the need for surgery. His procedural repertoire includes platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, Arthrosamid® viscosupplementation for knee osteoarthritis, hydro-dilatation for frozen shoulder, barbotage for calcific tendinitis, nerve blocks, trigger finger release, ganglion cyst removal, foreign body extraction and tissue biopsies.
Dr Ghazal performs thousands of image-guided injections each year, treating conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot. His expertise extends to CT and fluoroscopic-guided procedures, including spinal and joint interventions such as nerve root blocks, caudal epidurals and arthrograms, as well as targeted bone and soft-tissue biopsies.
Alongside intervention, Dr Ghazal has a strong interest in MRI, CT and ultrasound reporting for both sports and degenerative musculoskeletal conditions. His background in orthopaedics and physiotherapy enables him to interpret imaging in a broader clinical context, ensuring that every report is both accurate and practically useful to the referring clinician.
Dr Ghazal also provides imaging consultations and second-opinion services, helping patients better understand their scans and explore appropriate treatment pathways before committing to surgery.
His overall practice philosophy is one of precision, reassurance and empowerment — combining expert image interpretation with gentle, well-executed intervention to deliver care that is accurate, minimally invasive and tailored to each patient’s needs.
