Mr Lebur Rohman is a highly-regarded Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in sports knee injuries and lower limb joint replacement. At Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, he welcomes NHS, privately insured and self-paying patients.
His practice at Woodlands Hospital is complemented by his NHS work at Gateshead NHS Trust and showcases his dedication to orthopaedic excellence in the North East.
Born and raised in South Bank, Middlesbrough, Mr Rohman's journey to becoming a distinguished surgeon is a story of dedication and achievement. After achieving significant academic success, he earned a place at St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London. Here, he graduated with distinction in 2009. His commitment to his roots brought him back to the North East, where he undertook his junior doctor training and higher specialist surgical training.
Mr Rohman's expertise is underpinned by specialised training from some of the UK's most prestigious institutions. He completed a biological knee (knee osteotomy, ligament reconstruction, meniscal surgery, cartilage restoration) fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. This was under Professor Martyn Snow, an international expert in the field. His training also includes a revision knee and primary hip fellowship at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool. This time under Mr Alasdair Santini, current president of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK). His role was pivotal in the establishment of the Cheshire & Mersey revision hip and knee surgery multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
This specialised training has equipped Mr Rohman with the skills to offer bespoke surgical solutions for a range of knee conditions. These include:
He is also highly proficient in hip arthroplasty (joint replacement), and is known for achieving excellent results and patient satisfaction.
A local 'Smoggy', Mr Rohman is immensely proud of his Tees Valley heritage. His approach to patient care is rooted in building strong personal connections, earning him consistent commendations for his communication, compassion, and empathy. He understands the importance of making patients feel heard and valued, ensuring they are fully informed and comfortable throughout their treatment journey.
Mr Rohman's previous experience as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Liverpool, Wirral, and Manchester has been marked by significant contributions to orthopaedic services. He has catered to athletes from semi-professional and professional football, rugby, and sailing backgrounds. These demonstrate his ability to manage sports-related injuries effectively. His efforts in aiding elective recovery at Trafford Hospital Surgical Hub were recognised by the Manchester Evening News in September 2024, highlighting his impact on NHS service delivery.
His academic and leadership credentials include post-graduate diplomas in Clinical Education, Leadership, and Sports Medicine, as well as an Executive Master’s in Business Administration degree. This blend of clinical and managerial expertise has enabled him to lead and develop large-scale projects. These include establishing an acute knee service and day case arthroplasty in Wirral, a regional MDT in Liverpool, and leading elective recovery in Manchester. Currently, he is co-leading the establishment of the North East's first regional national cartilage centre in Gateshead, set to open in late spring 2025.
With 23 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 13 international and national conference presentations, Mr Rohman is committed to advancing orthopaedic knowledge. As a GMC-accredited Educational and Clinical Supervisor, he plays a crucial role in training the next generation of surgeons.
Family is a cornerstone of Mr Rohman's life. As one of seven siblings and an uncle to 20 nieces and nephews, he cherishes family time. He is a devoted husband and father to two young energetic children. Outside of his professional and family life, Mr Rohman enjoys watching football and weightlifting 3-4 times per week.
Mr Rohman's unique dual fellowship training in sports knee injuries, young adult knee preservation, and advanced arthroplasty of the knee and hip allows him to offer a truly comprehensive and tailored approach to patient care. He believes in providing treatment strategies that are precisely matched to each patient's individual needs, rather than being limited by a narrow range of surgical skills.
As a co-lead in the upcoming Regional Cartilage Centre in Gateshead, Mr Rohman is at the forefront of innovative cartilage repair techniques. While certain advanced procedures like meniscal transplantation and Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) may not be available in the private sector, patients can seamlessly transition to his NHS practice for these specialised treatments. This ensures access to the full spectrum of expertise and multi-disciplinary support available at the regional centre.
