About Mr Kevin Baird

Personal Profile

Kevin Baird qualified MB ChB with Honours from Aberdeen University in 1984, including an intercalated Degree in Pathology. He then spent initial surgical training years in the Aberdeen Teaching Hospitals, before his appointment in 1989 to the Glasgow Orthopaedic Training Rotation. During this time he conducted a research fellowship into Dupuytren’s Disease, a benign but disabling hand condition, charitably funded by Action Research. Mr Baird was then Senior Lecturer in the University Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery, led by Prof David Hamblen.

After completion of training, Mr Baird was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, taking up post in 1996. This was busy, varied and interesting, dealing with a variety of injuries and conditions across a vast and remote area;  his elective workload comprised hip and knee replacement, hand surgery and also shoulder and elbow surgery where he developed this sub-specialty interest within an original team of 5 surgeons.

Mr Baird has actively engaged with teaching of medical students and trainee surgeons. He was appointed Aberdeen University Lead for Year 4 students based in Inverness, and in 2011 became the Clinical Lead for the newly-opened Clinical Skills Centre, within the Centre for Health Science.

He continues to contribute to training and education, and has participated as faculty on numerous courses. Mr Baird is a regular Examiner for the MRCS examination, both in the UK and overseas. Over the past decade, he has examined trainee orthopaedic surgeons in several African nations, on behalf of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

Mr Baird was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow in 2014, and in 2017 was elected Vice-President (Surgical) for three years.

In 2022, he stepped down from full-time NHS work to assist with orthopaedic waiting list recovery work, firstly in Shetland and then Isle of Man; he was keen to deploy working practices which increased patient safety and theatre efficiency, incorporating best practice in the enhanced recovery process.

Outwith his private practice, Mr Baird contributes to the ongoing NHS elective surgery activity at the National Treatment Centre (Highland) in Inverness, supported by clinics in the Highlands, Grampian and Perthshire.

Patient feedback and reviews

  • Rating: 5 stars

I felt at ease, the nurses and my surgeon Mr Kevin Baird were excellent. They explained everything and the physiotherapist came in after my op and went over everything with me. Nothing was too much trouble for the nurses/staff.
