About Dr Katrin Balkhausen

Personal Profile

Dr Katrin Balkhausen graduated from Medical School at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany, in 2001 and received her medical approbation in 2003. Following a year of full-time research, she was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) with magna cum laude in 2003. Her early clinical experience included junior trainee roles in New Orleans (USA), Rome (Italy), Berlin (Germany), and Haywards Heath (UK). She subsequently pursued specialist training in medicine and cardiology in Berlin, completing the final four years of her cardiology training at Oxford University Hospitals in the UK. She is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) in both medicine and cardiology.
In 2015, Dr Balkhausen was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. Her outpatient practice includes general cardiology clinics, where she assesses and manages patients presenting with symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, or collapse. She also sees patients with murmurs, known valve disease, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, hypertension, and hypercholesterolaemia. In addition, she provides cardiac risk assessment and reduction, pre-operative evaluations for non-cardiac surgeries, and family screening for inherited heart conditions.
Dr Balkhausen runs regular specialist clinics focused on Inherited Heart Disease/Cardiomyopathies and Pulmonary Hypertension.
Her special interest lies in cardiac imaging, with particular expertise in transthoracic echocardiography, contrast and bubble echocardiography, stress echocardiography (both exercise and pharmacological), and transoesophageal echocardiography. She serves as the Echocardiography Lead at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and is accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography. Dr Balkhausen remains active in echocardiography research as a local Principal Investigator; she also oversees lists and reports on non-invasive coronary assessment with cardiac CT.
