Personal Profile

Personal profile

Miss Kathryn Gill is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in lower limb arthroplasty and trauma, at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.  She has recently launched a new flagship service in Guildford, providing day case hip and knee replacements, meaning that patients have to spend less time in hospital and usually make quicker recoveries post operatively.

Training and Appointment

After qualifying from University College London in 1997, Miss Gill completed her higher surgical training in the St George’s training region before being awarded a prestigious fellowship at the world-renowned Hip Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (PEOC), Exeter in 2011. During her year in Exeter, Miss Gill worked alongside a number of highly skilled surgeons, gaining experience in both primary hip replacement surgery and also revision hip surgery.  She completed a variety of research projects during this year, the results of which have subsequently been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Miss Gill completed an additional year of fellowship training in knee arthroplasty in 2012, working closely with Mr Neil Bradley at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
She currently sits on numerous committees and clinical governance groups at the Royal Surrey.  She is Fast track Arthroplasty Lead and sits on the Theatre Clinical Risk Group, the Thrombosis committee and the Transfusion committee.  Miss Gill also participated in the Quality Improvement for Surgical Teams (QIST) infection collaborative, which was a national project, allowing NHS Trusts to work together to reduce the impact of infection in joint replacement surgery. Miss Gill is the Lead consultant for medical students on placement at RSCH in the Orthopaedic department and is responsible for their education and wellbeing. Miss Gill is a member of the culture and diversity committee for the British Hip Society, a group that work hard to ensure there will be no barriers to anyone wishing to pursue a career in orthopaedic and hip surgery regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background.

Current Practice

Miss Gill has an interest in the investigation and treatment of hip and knee pain and is a specialist in hip and knee replacement and degenerative meniscal injuries. She has pioneered the development, with a multidisciplinary team, of an enhanced recovery program for rehabilitation after lower limb joint replacements that has produced superior functional results to more traditional rehabilitation techniques. Patients that wish to be discharged home quickly after joint replacement can discuss this with Miss Gill who is happy to offer a day case service if appropriate.

The first day case total hip replacement was performed by Miss Gill at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in July 2019: the female patient was discharged on the same day, just seven hours after surgery.  Although the surgery remains unchanged, at the end of it, Miss Gill injects local anaesthetic into the wound along with a drug called tranexamic acid, which helps to reduce bleeding at the operation site.  In Theatre recovery, patients are given a high calorie drink before being transferred back to the ward and, once the spinal anaesthetic has worn off, patients are encouraged to walk a short distance with a walking frame and Physio support before sitting in a chair. Patients are then encouraged to walk a short distance every 45-60 mins to prevent stiffening, thereby reducing pain.  As long as they feel able to, patients are then discharged on the same day, with plenty of post-operative support from Miss Gill and her team to ensure recovery is progressing well.

Miss Gill offers a weekly outpatient clinic at Mount Alvernia.
