About Mr Jonathan Dearing

Personal Profile

Jon originally trained in dentistry, working as a maxillofacial surgeon in the RAF before studying medicine and gaining qualifications in sports medicine. He played representative rugby union for the RAF and Bedford. He has undertaken Fellowship training in knee and shoulder surgery, and provides the complex knee ligament reconstruction and knee osteotomy service for Ayrshire. Jon performs the Attune knee replacement and uses the internal brace system which allows ligament repair, including of the anterior cruciate ligament. Jon also provides an arthroscopic surgery service for shoulder problems.

Jon is one of the few surgeons in Central Scotland performing Conformis Customised Knee Replacements and has been accredited to do so since 2018. Conformis is a bespoke knee replacement based on a CT scan of your knee compared to an off-the-shelf knee replacement which comes in a standard range of sizes. Each implant is designed to provide a customised fit to your knee, helping reduce sizing compromises that can lead to long-term pain after surgery. The implant restores the natural shape of your anatomy which could lead to a more stable and natural feeling knee. Traditional knee replacement surgery can have a satisfaction rate of around 80%; however studies on Conformis have shown this to be as high as 95%.

Jon is a Council Member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine and is the Lead for Physical Activity Promotion at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is also an examiner in postgraduate surgery and sports medicine.
