About Mr Jonathan Barrow

Personal Profile

Mr Jonathan Barrow is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a sub specialist focus on complex hip and knee surgery. His NHS practice is undertaken at the world-renowned Centre for Hip Surgery in Wrightington Hospital.

Jonathan qualified in Medicine from the University of Leeds in 2010, in addition to completing a BSc (Hons) in Sports and Exercise Medicine. He underwent his Foundation Training in West Yorkshire before undertaking his Specialty Orthopaedic training in the North West, finishing in Wrightington. He obtained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2014 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2019.

To further refine his skills in complex arthroplasty, Jonathan undertook the prestigious Cavendish Fellowship in Sheffield, under the mentorship of Mr Andrew Hamer and Mr Robert Kerry. This fellowship had a strong emphasis on revision (re-do) hip and knee surgery, prosthetic joint infection and endoprosthetic (megaprosthesis) replacements.

In 2021, Jonathan returned to Wrightington to complete the highly competitive Thackray Fellowship, under the mentorship of current and former British Hip Society Presidents, Mr Anil Gambhir and Professor Tim Board. This fellowship further developed his expertise in revision arthroplasty and complex reconstructive surgery.

Jonathan was appointed as a Consultant in Wrightington in 2022. In addition to his primary and revision surgery, he is an integral member of the Lower Limb Metastatic Bone Service, providing specialised care for patients with cancer, which has spread to the bones.

He is passionate about progressive surgical care, including enhanced recovery protocols and day-case joint replacement pathways, supporting faster recovery and improved patient experience without compromising safety or outcomes. He offers custom hip replacement, for specific cases.

Within Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, Jonathan is the lead for Surgical Site Infection prevention, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety. He also serves as the Research and Engagement Lead for the John Charnley Trust.

Jonathan has undertaken visits and professional exchanges in leading European arthroplasty centres, including the ENDO-Klinik and Lubinus Klinik, Germany, further broadening his clinical perspective.

Jonathan is committed to surgical education and professional development. He mentors and supervises trainee surgeons within the North West Deanery, is a course convenor for the FRCS revision courses at Wrightington, and regularly serves on faculty for orthopaedic surgical courses throughout the UK. He is a frequent presenter at national and international meetings and has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications in arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery).
