About Mr James Logan

Personal Profile

James Logan is an Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon who specialises in traumatic and degenerative conditions of the upper limbs, more especially of the hand and wrist. He takes a particular interest in complex wrist trauma and sports-related injuries of the arm.

Training and Appointment

As part of his surgical training, James undertook orthopaedic hand surgery fellowships with Professor David Warwick at University Hospital Southampton, and then with Professor Mark Ross at the then relatively new Brisbane Hand and Upper Limb unit in Queensland, Australia, which was established in 2010.

James has also undertaken a specialist orthoplastics hand surgery fellowship at University Hospital Birmingham, in order to expand his knowledge and to get a better understanding and appreciation of the role plastic surgery can play in reconstructing hands following severe trauma or sporting injuries.

He graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine, London, in 2007, before beginning his medical career as a houseman at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. He subsequently underwent Surgical training in the Wessex Deanery before returning to the Guildford Deanery to take up a post as a consultant hand and orthopaedic surgeon in 2019, where he still works today.

Because of his life-long love of, and active interest in sport and physical activity, in 2015 James additionally completed a post-graduate diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Cardiff Metropolitan University. He decided to take on this research-informed learning to further extend his knowledge of the contemporary issues in the sporting and exercise arena, and have a greater understanding of the implications of different treatments for potential injuries.

Research interests

James has published a number of peer-reviewed scientific papers covering the very many areas of hand surgery, and some other pieces of research in orthopaedics more generally. Additionally, he has written a number of book chapters, including a revision of the hand and wrist chapter for the 42nd edition of Gray’s Anatomy, which was published in 2020.

In the past James has represented both Great Britain at alpine skiing, and also represented England Universities at Rugby Union.
