About Mr Irfan Syed

Personal Profile

Mr Syed is a Consultant ENT Surgeon at University Hospital Lewisham and is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London.  He is the Departmental Clinical Lead for Rhinology & also Clinical Governance Lead.

He treats all aspects of general and paediatric ENT conditions and has a specialist interest in rhinology (nose & sinuses) & facial plastic surgery (nasal reconstruction and management of skin lesions). This also includes a dedicated clinic for management of patients with smell disorders and patients with snoring/sleep apnoea problems.

Mr Irfan Syed graduated from University College Hospital, London and completed his ENT higher surgical training on the London ENT training programme including Paediatric ENT surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

He gained advanced fellowship sub-specialty training in Rhinology & Facial Plastic surgery at St George’s Hospital, London to provide him with highly specialised expertise in these areas.

He was awarded the British Rhinological Society Bursary Award for training at the Sino-Nasal Institute of Florida, USA and the European Rhinological Society Award for training at the Amsterdam Medical Centre.  His international training has also taken him to Miami, Paris & Vancouver.

Irfan is well recognised for his role in post-graduate surgical teaching and has been course director for The London Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Course, The London Facial Plastic Surgery Course, The London ST3 Course & The London FRCS (ORL-HNS) Viva Course.

He is regularly invited to teach on national and international courses and has taught on Rhinodays 2024, East Anglian Sinus, Orbit & Skull Base Course, Guildford Sinus & Skull Base Course, London Facial Aesthetic Cosmetic Training Course.

He also trains the next generation of surgeons on the South East London Training Programme.

He has also been an invited speaker and chaired panels on many international conferences including the Confederation of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, European Rhinologic Society, European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.

He is the author of a number of textbooks in medicine and surgery and has published extensively in the peer-reviewed literature and presented his work internationally.

He has been actively involved in research and has been a principal investigator on a national trial investigating the management of chronic rhinosinusitis.

In addition to his clinical work, he is currently a specialist advisor to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
