About Mr Ian William Barlow

Personal Profile

Ian Barlow is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in Knee Surgery, Ian was appointed to Dorset County Hospital in 1998. He did his medical training at Bristol and trained in Orthopaedic surgery in Bristol, Leeds and Southampton. In 1996 he undertook a travelling fellowship in the USA in order to further develop his interest in sports injuries and arthroscopy.

Ian cares for patients across the whole spectrum of knee surgery, including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, ligament reconstruction, partial/total joint replacement and revision knee replacement. He has published widely on knee surgery including a handbook on knee arthroscopy for trainee surgeons and articles on meniscal (cartilage) repair, meniscal transplantation and salvage procedures for failed knee replacement.

Ian is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee. In the last few years he has convened training courses on knee arthroscopy and has accepted invitations to lecture at National and International Knee meetings. He is part of an international design group that is developing a high performance total knee replacement for young patients.

Mr Barlow is now offering Bespoke knee replacements. This procedure uses equipment that has been specifically designed for the patient receiving the new knee. The patient will have an MRI scan that enables a 3D model of the knee to be created. Using this model, unique cutting guides are produced, ensuring the knee replacement is inserted as accurately as possible, reducing surgery and recovery time for the patient.
