About Mr Ian R Mark

Personal Profile

Mr Mark was appointed to the faculty at the Lincoln County Hospital on 1 January 1999, as a Consultant Urological Surgeon, with responsibility for leading the development of services for urological cancer.

He trained in London, as a Senior Registrar in Urology at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital. Prior to this he was a Research Registrar at the Middlesex Hospital, London.

He has a special interest in prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer. He also has a keen interest in keyhole surgery and he was one of the first urologists to commence keyhole surgery for kidney cancer in the Trent and East Midlands region. This experience is now being expanded to include keyhole surgery for prostate cancer. The current cancer clearance rates, following prostate cancer surgery, are among the highest in the UK and Europe (positive surgical margin rate at less that 11% in a consecutive series of 185 radical prostatectomies; personal communication from IRM).

His interest in female urology and reconstruction led to the establishment of conventional urodynamics and video urodynamics at the Lincoln County Hospital, to assess patients with bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms and incontinence.

He has been key in introducing the facility of urodynamic assessment at Lincoln Private Hospital. Minimally invasive surgery for women with incontinence (stress incontinence and urge incontinence), is currently being offered at Lincoln Private Hospital.

Mr Mark works very closely with colleagues in the Department of Oncology (Lincolnshire Oncology Centre) and is in the process of establishing high dose rate interstitial radiotherapy (high dose rate brachytherapy), for patients with aggressive prostate cancer.  He is also actively involved in inducting patients into national and international trials for kidney cancer, prostate cancer and bladder cancer.
