Dr McCafferty is a diagnostic and interventional radiologist specialising in adults and children.
In the field of diagnostic imaging, his interest is particularly related to the genitourinary (kidneys, ureter, bladder, prostate) and gastrointestinal tract (bowel). Dr McCafferty concentrates mainly on cancer imaging and undertook additional training in CT colonography, MR enteroclysis and Prostate MRI imaging. Dr McCafferty is a founder member of the Birmingham bowel clinic and an original member of the Birmingham prostate clinic.
In the field of interventional radiology (image-guided surgeon) Dr McCafferty has introduced numerous new techniques at the Queen Elizabeth and Birmingham Children’s hospitals. His interests are with the treatment of cancers with embolisation and ablation, vascular access (port insertions) treatment of vascular malformations and the use of embolisation to treat a range of conditions such as prostate artery embolisation, uterine artery embolisation, pelvic congestion syndrome and varicocele embolisation.
Dr McCafferty actively participates in teaching regularly giving regional and national lectures, arranging national training courses. He has published widely and written several book chapters.
Dr McCafferty is active nationally promoting image-guided surgery and interventional radiology training. He has co-written the provision of interventional radiology services document and served numerous positions within the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) and is currently President. He was co-founder of the British Society of urogenital radiology; Interventional Oncology UK and vascular anomalies special interest group
