Mr Hans Marynissen is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialised in knee and shoulder operations. He graduated from the University of Antwerp in 1992. His initial training as an Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon took place in Belgian's foremost Sports Injury centre for shoulder and knee problems under Prof Martens and Prof Verstreken. In 1996 he undertook a further training post in Frere Hospital, East London and the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. This focused on the management of trauma working in a high intensity trauma unit that catered to a large patient population. He also completed a fellowship in Microsurgery, refining techniques of vascular and neurological repair.

In 1998 Mr Marynissen completed his higher surgical training in Antwerp, Belgium as Resident Orthopaedic Surgeon working in the Knee and Shoulder Unit. He was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the East Lancashire NHS Trust in 1999. He has been working there since, developing his practice in knee and shoulder surgery as well as undertaking a fellowship in the USA under Mr Savoie to refine his techniques of shoulder arthroscopy.

Mr Marynissen works closely with a multidisciplinary team of physio- and sports-therapists, to provide care for routine and complex shoulder and knee conditions as well as sports trauma.

His practice seeks to be joint preserving, delaying the need for more invasive operations such as total joint replacements wherever possible. For many of these techniques he was the first surgeon to introduce these into the area.

In the knee he achieves this by keyhole surgery and ligament reconstructions. He performs cutting-edge techniques in osteotomy (the re-alignment of bone) and partial knee replacement. He is at the forefront of offering personalised made-to-measure knee replacements, which allow for a faster recovery time and reduced post-operative pain.

In the shoulder he addresses most conditions through injection therapy or keyhole surgery techniques with intensive rehabilitation. Total shoulder replacement remains a final treatment option.

Mr Marynissen is a qualified Medical Educator. He has various publications in peer-reviewed journals and has collaborated in research in shoulder and knee conditions.

In his spare time Mr Marynissen is a keen cyclist, footballer, tennis and badminton player and guitarist. He is also working towards a Coastal Skipper qualification in sailing.
