Clinical Interests

Robotic-assisted knee replacement

Robotic-assisted knee replacement combines advanced imaging, computer planning, and precision-guided technology to support accurate implant positioning and soft tissue balancing during surgery.

Mr Gwithyen Silk is certified in VELYS™, MAKO, and ROSA robotic systems and offers robotic-assisted total and partial knee replacement for suitable patients with knee arthritis.

At Three Shires Hospital, VELYS™ robotic-assisted technology is available to support knee replacement procedures.

Potential benefits of robotic-assisted surgery may include:

  • Greater surgical precision
  • Improved implant positioning
  • Enhanced soft tissue balancing
  • Faster early recovery for some patients
  • Improved patient satisfaction
  • Personalised surgical planning

All patients undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine whether robotic-assisted surgery is the most appropriate treatment.

Total knee replacement

Total knee replacement is a well-established procedure used to relieve pain and improve function in patients with knee arthritis.

Mr Silk performs total knee replacement using modern surgical techniques, with a focus on:

  • Reducing pain
  • Improving mobility
  • Restoring joint function
  • Surgery may be considered when:
  • Knee pain limits everyday activities
  • Conservative treatments are no longer effective
  • Sleep is disrupted by pain
  • Walking distance becomes restricted
  • Quality of life is significantly affected

He provides comprehensive pre-operative assessment, clear patient education, and structured rehabilitation to support recovery and long-term outcomes.

Partial knee replacement

For patients with arthritis affecting only one part of the knee, partial knee replacement may be an appropriate alternative to total knee replacement.

Potential advantages include:

  • Smaller surgical procedure
  • Preservation of healthy bone and ligaments
  • More natural knee movement
  • Faster recovery
  • Less post-operative discomfort

Mr Silk has extensive training in this technique and carefully assesses whether it is suitable for each individual patient.

ACL reconstruction and sports knee injuries

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries commonly occur during activities involving twisting, pivoting, or sudden changes in direction.

Mr Silk provides specialist assessment and treatment for:

  • ACL injuries
  • Meniscal tears
  • Cartilage injuries
  • Patellar instability
  • Multi-ligament knee injuries
  • Sports-related knee pain

Treatment is tailored to each patient’s age, activity level, and goals. Where surgery is required, modern reconstruction techniques are combined with structured rehabilitation programmes to support a safe return to activity.

Meniscal surgery

The meniscus acts as a shock absorber within the knee and can be damaged through injury or age-related degeneration.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Locking or catching
  • Instability
  • Reduced activity levels

Mr Silk offers expert assessment and management of meniscal injuries. Where possible, meniscal preservation and repair are prioritised to support long-term knee health. If repair is not suitable, minimally invasive arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery may be used to relieve symptoms and restore function.
