Mr Guy Finch holds a weekly clinic at Three Shires Hospital, where he sees patients on an insured, self-funding, and NHS basis. He treats patients from a wide range of locations, including areas across Northamptonshire such as Olney, Towcester, Brackley, Weedon, and Desborough. Additionally, some patients travel from further afield, including Buckinghamshire, Leicester, and surrounding counties.
Mr Guy Finch is a highly respected Consultant General Surgeon with a distinguished career spanning over two decades, specialising in surgery of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas, in addition to his extensive work as an emergency and general surgeon. He received his comprehensive surgical training in Sheffield, London, Bristol, and Leicester before qualifying as a Consultant in 2005. His commitment to advancing surgical practices began early, with his fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996, followed by groundbreaking research into liver tumour treatments in Adelaide, where he was awarded the Australasian Surgical Research Society's ‘Young Investigator of the Year Award.’ His research earned him an MD, establishing his expertise in this area.
Since 1994, Mr Finch has been a leader in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, both performing and teaching advanced techniques. He has trained numerous junior surgeons and Consultant colleagues in laparoscopic procedures, shaping the next generation of surgeons. His contributions to healthcare have been recognised through multiple awards, including being named the Leicester Mercury 'Doctor of the Year' in 2003 and a nominee for the East Midlands Healthcare Award in 2010. A former trainee even honoured him by naming an operating theatre after him.
Mr Finch has an impressive track record of leadership in surgical care, having chaired the Upper Gastro-intestinal (gullet and stomach) and Hepatopancreaticobiliary (liver, pancreas, gallbladder) cancer MDTs for 15 years. Additionally, he served as Bariatric, Day Case, and Emergency Surgical Lead at Northampton General Hospital, where he has also been the General Surgical Lead Clinician for the last five years. Mr Finch is the local lead for numerous national and international audits, reflecting his dedication to improving surgical outcomes on a broader scale.
Focusing now on benign surgical conditions, Mr Finch is a founding committee member of the British Benign Upper GI Surgical Society, where he has co-authored several national guidelines. He also serves on the sub-committee of the National Hiatal Surgical Registry. His leadership in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) has resulted in significant improvements, including increasing day-case rates from 4% to 72%, showcasing his ability to lead successful service reconfigurations.
A renowned expert in laparoscopic hernia repairs, particularly inguinal and complex incisional hernias, Mr Finch has delivered lectures at prominent international conferences such as the European Hernia Society and the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. His extensive practice in hiatal hernia surgery is among the largest in the UK, and he frequently presents on this topic at the Association of Upper GI Surgeons.
In addition to his surgical expertise, Mr Finch is an advanced interventional endoscopist, regularly performing complex therapeutic endoscopies, including oesophageal stent insertions, polypectomies, and ERCPs, which aid in the management of liver-related blockages.
Beyond his clinical work, Mr Finch plays a key role in medical education. He has been an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons since 2012 and is an assessor for national surgical trainees and clinical excellence awards. He has supervised over 100 trainee surgeons and contributed to educational programmes, including a novel training course introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to teach the practical aspects of surgery, focusing on areas like ergonomics and tool usage.
