Personal Profile

 Jonathan Guy Finch, completed his training in Sheffield, London and Leicester, sub-specialising in surgery of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder and pancreas, as well as being an emergency and general surgeon. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996 and performed novel research into the treatment of liver tumours in Adelaide in 1999-2000, attaining an MD for this work. He has been performing laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery since 1994.

In 2003 he was the Leicester Mercury 'Doctor of the Year' and was nominated for an East Midlands Healthcare award in 2010. He also has an Operating Theatre named in his honour by a successful previous trainee. 

Previously a cancer and a bariatric surgeon, Mr Finch now concentrates on benign work, being a committee member of the British Benign Upper GI Surgical Society since its inception. He is a co-author of several National guidelines and is on the sub-committee of the National Hiatal Surgical Registry. He has also been the local lead for laparoscopic cholecystectomies, overseeing many service re-configurations, including an increase in day case rates from 4 to 72%. Aside from this he is well-known for his expertise with laparoscopic hernias, mainly inguinal but also complex incisional hernias, on which he has lectured many times, including an invited talk at the European Hernia Society and the Association of Surgeons and he has taught the technique to other Consultants.

General Laparoscopic Surgeon with Specialist Interest in Upper Gastro-intestinal and Hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) disorders.

Upper GI / HPB procedures include:

  • Upper gastro-intestinal cancer work, resection and palliation
  • Surgery for reflux disease and benign Upper GI disorders (dysmotility, ulcer disease and hiatus hernia repair).
  • Biliary disease including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and open bile duct exploration
  • Benign liver and pancreatic disease, including cyst drainage
  • Splenic disorders including laparoscopic splenectomy

General procedures including:

  • All Hernia surgery – laparoscopic and open repair under general or local anaesthetic
  • Inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical hernia, epigastric hernia, Spigelian hernia, hiatus hernia (sliding and rolling), rare herniae (parastomal, lumbar, diaphragmatic etc)
  • Gallbladder Cholecystectomy Laparoscopic
  • Skin lesions
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, gastroscopy and sigmoidoscopy, PEG insertion and oesophageal stenting
