General Information and Interests

Mr Talawadekar works as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interest in upper limb surgery. He has performed over 3000 upper limb surgeries/procedures as a Consultant Upper limb surgeon in the last 6 years, including shoulder, elbow and hand/wrist elective and trauma surgeries. This includes shoulder replacements, complex shoulder soft tissue reconstructions and thumb Carpometacarpal joint replacements among others. He has special interest in management of sports injuries including arthroscopic (key hole) shoulder and elbow surgery, management of young adult shoulder problems, minimally invasive surgery and complex shoulder arthroplasty.

Mr Talawadekar is a keen teacher. He is an examiner for Undergraduate Medical students at the Lancaster University and also a faculty for the prestigious AO UK foundation. He takes great pride in teaching in regional and national training courses while constantly updating himself through regular conferences and collaborating with other surgeons. 

He enjoys music and is trained in classical singing which is his favourite interest outside medicine. Running is his keen passion.

Training and Appointment
Mr Talawadekar completed his basic orthopaedic training in various hospitals in Mumbai and Pune, India where he was awarded the master of orthopaedic surgery. He then gained further training in Upper limb surgery in the South East of England before embarking of fellowship training at the Ashford & St Peters hospital and Epsom & St Helier Hospitals in London and at the Prestigious Pan Am clinic in Winnipeg, Canada. These fellowships and the previous training have given him an excellent experience in a wide range of shoulder, Elbow, Hand and Wrist surgery. He has been working as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon since 2016.

He operates on the full range of commonly seen elective hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder cases. He also performs multiple lower limb surgeries for general trauma.

Clinical Interests

Mr Talawadekar has a keen interest in research. He has published widely on various topics related to Trauma and Orthopaedics. He also has numerous presentations at national and international level. He has also published chapters in upper limb surgical book. He has been the Principle Investigator at Furness General Hospital for numerous National Research and Audit projects including PROFHER2, ARTISAN,RAPSODI, PATHS, CIPHUR trials.

List of commonly performed procedures

Shoulder: 

  • Shoulder arthroscopy (Key Hole surgery) - decompression, biceps tenotomy/tenodesis, instability repair, frozen shoulder release. 
  • Shoulder replacements - anatomical and reverse geometry replacement, Hemiarthroplasty,
  • Shoulder/girdle trauma - Clavicle fracture fixations for acute fractures and non unions, proximal humeral fracture fixations, tight rope fixations for AC joint dislocation 
  • Injections - for shoulder issues like impingement, frozen shoulder, AC joint pain.

Elbow:

  • Elbow Arthroscopy - Stiff elbow release, tennis elbow release, Joint clearance for arthritis Elbow Replacement – Hemiarthroplasty (half elbow replacement for fractures), radial head replacement.
  • Soft tissue procedures - Ligament reconstruction, tennis elbow release, golfers elbow release, Platelet Rich Plasma injections, nerve releases (ulnar nerve), distal biceps tendon rupture repair.

Hand and wrist: 

  • Soft tissue - Carpal tunnel release,  trigger finger release , Dupuytrens disease fasciectomy, Dequervains disease, Trapeziectomy for arthritis at base of thumb, Removal of swellings/ganglions.
  • Injections - for hand small joint arthritis.
  • Thumb joint replacement – MAIA replacements for basal thumb arthritis.
