He is the editor of Recent Advances in Paediatrics. This is a highly regarded book series, published every 2 – 3 years aimed at educating paediatricians and Postgraduate paediatric trainees on recent developments in paediatrics. He aims to ensure that each child benefits from the latest evidence and guidelines, while still understanding fully well that Paediatrics is a combination of science and art. His focus is on taking a detailed history from the parents and the child; to understand the root cause of their symptoms. In a world of increasing medical complexity and range of available tests; he focusses on history and his clinical skills and minimising investigations or uncomfortable procedures in children when not necessary.
Dr Kulkarni is more than happy to help you with all Paediatric referrals where your GP would prefer a specialist opinion. This ranges from early infancy where the problems include feeding issues, reflux, allergies and constipation, to more complex problems as children get older. He has an interest in managing pain such as headaches and tummy aches in children. He looks after diagnosis and management of epilepsy in children and often more complex problems in older teenagers. He has a special interest in all aspects of adolescent health and the complex inter relationship between psychological problems and physical health.
He understands the parental anxiety when faced with an unwell child and does his best to understand parental concerns and reassure them. He connects well with children who may themselves be very nervous about attending a consultation and tries his best to make the encounter a fun experience. He looks after all children, regardless of their backgrounds with the same enthusiasm.
Through a series of exceptional training posts in the UK and India, he has an excellent and unique experience in all aspects of Paediatrics & Adolescent Health, over a career which spans 25 years of working with children and their families! Following his initial training in paediatrics from the University of Pune, where he was awarded the first prize, he undertook research in Mother to Child transmission of HIV; as part of a pioneering study to reduce HIV transmission. His subsequent training was based in London with specialist experience in allergy, epilepsy and neurology. He worked for 10 years as a consultant in the NHS at Darent valley Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup where he set up specialist clinics in Allergy and Epilepsy.
He now practices privately, balancing his academic interests in editorial work and teaching. Dr Kulkarni has held practicing privileges with Circle health for over 15 years. Currently he practices at Chelsfield Park and The Blackheath Hospital where he sees children from birth to 18. He is a representative of the Medical Advisory Committee at Chelsfield Park Hospital, where he takes a lead in ensuring that services continue to be child friendly.
He has been a specialist Advisor in Paediatrics for the Care Quality Commission ( CQC ) which is the organisation ensuring quality standards in Hospitals are adhered to.
While he is passionate in ensuring that he manages his patients using the latest advances in Paediatrics; he is fully committed to adhering to the latest guidelines. Given the complexity of patients that he looks after; he prefers patients have a referral letter from their GP/insurance company.
