Personal Profile

Mr Fizan Younis is a European board-certified Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon.  Having spent over 10 years in the NHS as a consultant at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, he now works exclusively within the private sector.  Mr Younis specialises in treating hand and wrist conditions with a particular emphasis on treating commonly occurring conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, ganglia, base of thumb arthritis and Dupuytren’s contracture. He also has a specialist interest in treating martial arts and cricket-related hand injuries.

Mr Younis graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff in 2002.  He completed his basic and higher surgical training in the Northwest of England.  He then continued his training in specialist centres in Canada and France. He was awarded an AO Travelling Trauma fellowship to McGill University Hospital in Montreal.  Here Mr Younis received advanced training in the treatment of upper limb fractures and ligament injuries. He also trained at the Institut de la Main in Paris as part of the Training Programme Travelling Award awarded by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH). Here he received specialist training in wrist arthroscopy techniques.

Mr Younis is an enthusiastic educator and has a postgraduate diploma in medical education.  He is grateful for having been recognised for his training with numerous awards including the Trainer of the Year for the Northwest region in 2021, the Educator Excellence award awarded by Health Education Northwest for consecutive years in 2018 and 2019 and the best educator for year 4 by the University of Central Lancashire in 2018.  Mr Younis is the co-chair of the AO Hand and Wrist course for the UK, and he is one of only 40 examiners in the whole of Europe for the European Diploma of Hand Surgery.

Mr Younis has a particular interest in research and has been involved in several national and international multicentre trials including the CRAFFT trial, DISC trial, Suspect study, Corona Hands study, COVID-Surg trial, POINT Trial and the Hands-2 trial. Mr Younis has published a series of papers the most recent of which address the gender pay-gap in Orthopaedics and another that looks at the prevelance of hand and wrist complaints following infection with Corona Virus.
