About Ellis Downes

Personal Profile

Ellis Downes is one of the UK’s most experienced Obstetrician & Gynaecologist’s and has been a Consultant for over twenty years. He is a recognised National and International Key-Opinion leader, and a highly experienced clinician with a long-standing successful medical practice, which attracts patients from all over the United Kingdom and internationally.

Mr Downes believes passionately that every woman is different and as such must be treated as an individual. This involves understanding in detail what the problem is, how it is affecting her and her family, and establishing what treatment options are available.  He has built his reputation upon patient satisfaction as well as recommendations from general practitioners and other healthcare professional colleagues.

He is both a Private Obstetrician and a Private Gynaecologist with a keen interest in endoscopic surgery (key hole) and urogynaecology (bladder problems). He sees many women with heavy and/or irregular periods, endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids and menopausal symptoms.  He is keen to avoid hysterectomy and will consider alternative options where appropriate.

Bladder problems are very common and miserable, Mr Downes can help with treating leakage (urinary incontinence), recurrent urinary tract infections, as well as urinary and bowel symptoms associated with prolapse.

Mr Downes provides a full range of gynaecological services and offers general gynaecological reviews including cervical smears and ultrasound scans.

Contraceptive advice is also available including the fitting of the Mirena or Nova-T coils.  Blood tests, routine mammograms and fertility investigations can all be arranged, together with early stage advice for those wishing to become pregnant, with referrals for IVF and sperm analysis if required.

Mr Downes has comprehensive obstetric packages from early pregnancy through to delivery and is happy to offer a planned caesarean section if wished.

Some common procedures carried out by Mr Downes are:

  • Hysteroscopy – to check the womb for an explanation as to why heavy bleeding may be occurring
  • Ablation – to treat and minimise heavy bleeding
  • Laparoscopy – to diagnose and treat pelvic pain
  • Cystoscopy – to check the bladder for the cause of recurrent urinary tract infections

Mr Downes has consulting rooms in both Central London (in the world renowned Harley Street) and North London (Kings Oak Hospital) offering his patients flexibility with appointments. He primarily performs gynaecological operations at The King Edward VII Hospital and Kings Oak Hospital, and delivers babies at The Portland Hospital.

Mr Downes has a passion for teaching, research and keeping up to date with medical advances and tries to offer his patients the latest appropriate treatments.  He lectures widely at medical conferences nationally and internationally and has extensive experience in writing medico-legal reports in relation to both obstetrics and gynaecology.

Outside of medicine he is married to Louise with two adult children. He enjoys messing around in boats, spends time in Alderney, Channel Islands, and depresses himself with his lack of prowess on the golf course.
