Dr Langford is a Consultant Cardiologist based in the Bromley and Orpington area. His private clinics are on a Tuesday morning at Chelsfield Park Hospital, near Orpington and on a Monday evening at The Sloane Hospital in Beckenham. From 1998 until May 2024 he was a Consultant in Cardiology and General Medicine at King’s College Hospitals NHS Trust, based mainly at Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington. He also conducted NHS clinics in Sevenoaks. He was the Clinical Director of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine until 2013, during which time he oversaw the introduction of the hyper-acute Stroke service. In 2003-4 he set up the Cardiac Catheter and Permanent Pacemaker services at the Princess Royal University Hospital, providing invasive Cardiology diagnosis and treatment locally for the first time. These have run for 20 years with excellent outcomes.
His NHS and private work have covered the full range of Cardiology. Since leaving the NHS in 2024 he has been clinic-based, where he continues to treat a wide range of cardiac conditions including heart rhythm problems, chest pain, heart failure, heart valve disease and preventive Cardiology including high blood pressure. At Princess Royal University Hospital he ran the service for Cardiac problems in pregnancy and he maintains an interest in this field. He also has an interest in Sports Cardiology and has conducted sports screening for organisations including the Football Association.
Dr Langford is happy to see both insured and self-pay patients. Some insurance companies require a referral from your doctor. This is not a requirement for Dr Langford but it is always helpful if you can bring any information you have about your condition to the consultation. He will usually need to perform an ECG at the initial consultation. Further Cardiac tests including Echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart), heart monitoring and blood pressure monitoring are all available at both Chelsfield Park and The Sloane Hospitals. For heart rhythm monitoring a system called Zio is used, which is more convenient than the type of monitor used in many NHS services. It consists of a sticky patch which you post back at the end of the recording period.
Feedback has highlighted Dr Langford’s excellent communication skills. He emphasizes the importance of patients understanding their condition and for this reason his appointments are longer than those of many of his colleagues. This allows additional time for discussion of the diagnosis and the treatment options.
Practising what he preaches, Dr Langford likes to keep active, particularly cycling over the North Downs in addition to more sedate activities such as walking the dog and playing the cello.
Training
Dr Langford trained at Cambridge University and King’s College School of Medicine, where he received the Jelf Medal and the Todd Prize. He underwent clinical training in London and the South East, including at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington; Guy’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital. He was awarded a prestigious Medical Research Council Training Fellowship to study for a Doctorate, researching the role of platelets in heart conditions including heart attacks, coronary artery operations and pregnancy-related problems. He gained his MD in 1996 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2003.
