Mr Alexander was raised and educated on the Fylde Coast and graduated from the University of Manchester in 2012. He then completed a Masters in Surgical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh during his core training rotation in West Yorkshire (Airedale, Bradford & Leeds). He returned to the North-West region for higher specialty training in 2016, working across several of the region’s hospitals ranging from Blackpool, Preston, Lancaster, Bolton and Manchester. He obtained his certificate of completion of training in 2022.
Having had a substantial exposure to complex and revision hip and knee arthroplasty during his training; he honed his skills further at a prestigious revision arthroplasty fellowship at Wirral University Hospitals in Merseyside, where he also gained experience managing cancer patients with metastatic bone disease. He has thus acquired a wealth of experience from highly regarded surgeons across the North of England.
Mr Alexander has a strong academic record having published over a dozen peer reviewed articles and presented at both national and international conferences. He has also won prizes in both Yorkshire and North-West regions for his quality improvement projects which included leading a region wide collaboration involving 10 different hospitals to find the optimal prosthesis to reduce the risk of dislocation in patients with hip fractures treated with a total hip replacement (N-DURE study).
Medical education has been a key pillar in Mr Alexander’s professional development. He sought formal training and completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Edge Hill. He has had various roles in undergraduate medical education ranging from delivering lectures, PBL tutor and being a final year examiner. He continues to be involved in this regard supporting medical students from UCLan and Lancaster University rotating through East Lancashire Hospitals.
Post-graduate medical education is also a key part of his current role. He regularly teaches and examines on national courses for the exit exam for trauma and orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth), in addition to being on the interview panels for the selection of future orthopaedic surgeons at a national level.
In his practice, Mr Alexander is a highly data driven professional and ensures he delivers the best solutions for his patients by regularly attending national and international conferences. He has had experience during his fellowship in using app-based technologies to optimise the pre & post operative journeys of his patients and is a keen proponent of AI technology.
Mr Alexander was drawn to orthopaedic surgery as he feels it is the best amalgamation his parent’s professions of anaesthetist (mum) and engineer (dad). He is married to a physiotherapist and has a young daughter. He enjoys going for long walks on the Fylde Coast with his family and their cockapoo, weight training and is a keen Formula 1 fan.
