His special interest is in ultrasound imaging and minimal invasive surgery; in both specialist areas he has more than 20 years of experience. He is lead clinician for endometriosis at Northampton General Hospital. Minimal access surgery means performing surgery without an open incision. As a specialist for performing advanced laparoscopic surgery Mr. von Widekind avoids conventional open surgery in nearly all situations. For the patient this translates as a much faster recovery, less scaring and a much lower risk of infection or complication. He was first to introduce lash hysterectomy in the east-midlands. A procedure he performs on all cases including larger wombs, which usually are not considered for this procedure. For the patient this also means a far shorter hospital stay of 23 hours.
Training:
Mr. von Widekind qualified as a doctor in Berlin, Germany, 1988. His first post was with the Krankenhaus Neukoelln in Berlin, a teaching hospital and one of the first training centres for keyhole surgery in gynaecology in Germany. Here he underwent extensive training in advanced laparoscopic procedures and gained a solid foundation for the competence required for this advanced skill. He was appointed to a consultant post in 1998 at a Teaching Hospital of Cologne University. Having worked in England in the 80s as a senior house officer, he and his English wife decided to return to the UK with their daughters and in 2001 he moved back to Britain where he took the post of consultant at Northampton. Here has received several clinical excellence awards for his contributions to development of gynaecological services at Northampton General Hospital. He is a recognised expert in management of gynaecological disorders using ultrasound, assessment of ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, period problems sexual dysfunction, prolapse, urinary incontinence genital discomfort, fibroid uterus, endometriosis and problems with menopause.
Research:
At the Krankenhaus Neukoelln Berlin the significant benefits of the new technologic techniques for women became obvious to him and triggered his keen interest in laparoscopic strategies for the treatment of cancer and infections. He wrote his doctoral thesis on Laparoscopy and pelvic abscess and presented on national meetings and international congresses.
