About Dr Chris Steadman

Personal Profile

Dr. Steadman undertook his primary medical degree (MB ChB) and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in Bristol.
He moved to Birmingham for specialist training in Cardiology, working in three major teaching hospitals including the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, one of the largest hospitals in the UK. He also spent over two years at the Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit as a Clinical Research Fellow for the British Heart Foundation and National Institute for Health Research. His research into aortic valve disease was presented in the Early Career Award finals for both the British and International Society of Cardiac MRI and resulted in many abstracts, peer-reviewed publications and the award of the higher medical research degree, Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Leicester. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London, a mark of excellence for Physicians.

He moved to Dorset in 2013 and is a full time NHS Consultant Cardiologist based at University Hospitals Dorset. He is also a senior clinical leader and has been the Clinical Director for Medical Specialties since 2017. He is a regular faculty member for the British Cardiovascular Society Annual Scientific Meeting and is the Wessex Deanery training lead for echocardiography. He has run regional echocardiography conferences in Poole.

Dr Steadman remains active in clinical research acting as a Principal Investigator for cardiology research studies based in Poole and continues to produce publications in the medical literature. He has previously written book chapters in a number of Cardiology textbooks.

Dr Steadman prides himself on being patient focused and has a friendly and approachable manner leading to high levels of patient satisfaction.

Clinical Interests

Dr Steadman specializes in all aspects of General Cardiology but has a particular interest in advanced cardiovascular imaging including cardiac CT (CT coronary angiography), and cardiac MRI. He is one of the few Consultants in the UK who has Level 3 Accreditation (the highest level) in both cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. He also performs advanced echocardiography (including transthoracic, stress and transoesophageal echocardiography). He is therefore ideally placed to investigate and diagnose possible cardiac symptoms including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizzy spells and blackouts, or simply to provide a cardiovascular health check. He can also treat all common cardiac conditions. He has a particular clinical interest in valve disease, where his clinical research was focused, and cardiomyopathy.
