Mr Gnanachandran is an experienced gynaecology consultant and an expert in gynaecology scanning laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries. Mr Gnanachandran leads endometriosis, fibroid, and one-stop rapid cancer diagnosis services/treatment in Northampton General Hospital NHS and the  Three Shires Hospital, and supports national training for O&G regionally.

He offers scanning for pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, fibroids and ovarian cysts, including suspected ovarian cancers and pelvic pain and offers treatments when needed. He is the expert in the region for total laparoscopic hysterectomies (+removal of the cervix+/- leaving the ovaries), complete surgeries for endometriosis(after MDT if needed) and fibroid surgeries.

Mr Gnanachandran is committed to delivering exceptional, evidence-based care for women with endometriosis to women across Northamptonshire and neighbouring regions. He drives the services now and has gotten BSGE accreditation for the Centre for Deep Infiltrative Endometriosis at Northampton. Mr Gnanachandran jointly leads a multidisciplinary team at the endometriosis centre at Northampton General Hospital, providing women with access to expert treatment and specialist surgeons with severe and complex endometriosis collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. 

He runs a one-stop pelvic scan clinic in NGH and the Three Shires Hospital for Irregular bleeding, Pelvic pain and bloating, and he gives fast diagnoses for endometriosis, endometrial polyp, ovarian cyst, ovarian cancer and suspected endometrial cancer.

Mr Gnanachandran is also part of Northamptonshire MDT team for gynaecological cancer.

He routinely assesses for deep endometriosis in patients with pelvic pain and pain during periods/ sex when scanning for pelvic pain in reproductive-age women more than routine pain/bloating

He is an experienced Professional who offers pelvic scanning and laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries He has performed over 70 laparoscopic hysterectomies in 12 months (01/01/2024- 01/12/204) for fibroids, adenomyosis, and endometrial cancer conditions. This is in addition to more than 30 laparoscopic surgeries for endometriosis, and more than 20 laparotomies for suspected cancer or large fibroids more than 12 cm, in that period

He provides a range of treatments for patients with various gynaecological conditions including pelvic pain (endometriosis, PID adenomyosis, fibroids, ovarian cyst), heavy periods (fibroids, adenomyosis), cervical abnormalities, ovarian/ adnexal masses, and early endometrial or gynaecological related cancers.

Mr Gnanachandran is IOTA (International Ovarian Tumour Analysis) certified for ovarian cyst/ ovarian cancer scanning, and he performs Uterus scanning based on IETA (International Endometrial Tumour Analysis) for irregular bleeding.

He is an IOTA-accredited scanner for suspected ovarian cancer/ ovarian cysts with dermoid cyst/ endometrioma/other conditions.

He is well known for his practice in the below clinic areas:

  • Gynaecology scans and ovarian cyst assessment for cancer and benign conditions. As of January 2022, he is the only person nationally to offer 3D TVS for fibroids and uterine abnormality, HyCOSY for tubal patency and IOTA/ adnexal model assessment of ovarian cyst for risk malignancy.
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomies, including on patients with fibroids, heavy menstrual periods and early endometrial cancer. He performs around 90% of hysterectomies laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and in 2024 he performed more than 70 Laparoscopic complete hysterectomies with a conversion to open surgery of less than 5%.
  • Fibroids-Myomectomy: (Laparoscopic if less than four fibroids - open if more than four fibroids or large calcified fibroids)
  • Endometriosis: Stage 1-3. Stage 4 patients are sent to the endometriosis centre, Centre for Deep Infiltrative Endometriosis @ Northampton.
  • Hysteroscopy, hysteroscopic removal of polyp and resection of fibroids. He uses mechanical removal of polyps and bipolar/ monopolar resection of fibroids.
  • Colposcopy and treatment of Cervical precancer and early cervical cancer. He is accredited in colposcopy and follows National cervical screening and local guidelines to avoid unnecessary treatment.

Mr Gnanachandran was appointed as a Consultant at Northampton General Hospital in 2016 and was tasked with helping to improve fertility and gynaecological services, specifically minimally invasive surgery and gynaecology scans.

Since joining, he has developed the service by introducing and providing training in new and advanced scanning techniques, ultimately helping to streamline the provision of treatment.

He also developed, led and trained nurses in a one-stop rapid access care provision pathway for patients with all four types of suspected gynaecology cancer. Or for those with cancer symptoms.

His current post includes leadership in emergency gynaecology, fertility services and rapid access care (patients with suspected cancer).

In addition to his consulting work at NGH he also acts as Primary Investigator for 2 research studies, namely: 

  • ROCkeTS: A study looking at improving tests for ovarian cancer in an ovarian cyst, pelvic mass, high ca 125 and ovarian cancer symptoms
  • PROTECTOR is a research study for women who are at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.
