About Mr Charles Antony Willis-Owen

Personal Profile

Qualifications and Training

Charles received a first-class medical education at Oxford University, where he studied medicine, physiological sciences, and sports psychology, qualifying as a doctor in 2000. He initially worked as a junior doctor in the Oxford region before moving to the prestigious North West Thames training program to specialise in orthopaedics.

He is dual-qualified in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine, holding both a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and Membership of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (MFSEM). This combination enables him to provide highly specialist surgical treatment for sports injuries while also understanding the psychological aspects of sports performance.

During his six years of training, he secured a top fellowship at Sportsmed SA, Australia’s leading sports clinic. This experience allowed him to learn from some of the world's best sports knee and hip surgeons, refining his techniques and adopting cutting-edge approaches to sports injury management.

Charles was among the youngest surgeons to pass the orthopaedic exit exam (FRCS Tr&Orth). His early consultancy career included performing major trauma surgery at St Mary’s Hospital in Central London before spending four years in South East London, honing his skills in high-pressure environments. Eventually, he settled in Poole and Bournemouth to provide his three children with the best quality of life the UK has to offer.

Alongside his clinical work, he has been actively involved in research and academia. He has published over 40 international papers and book chapters, has presented at scientific meetings worldwide, and has taught other surgeons in various courses. He also provides expert advice to the orthopaedic industry, the General Medical Council, and the courts.

Sporting Expertise

Passionate about all forms of sport, Charles has represented Great Britain in the cycling World Championships, competed at the international elite level in marathon running, and participated in university and regional competitions in cycling, triathlon, and rowing.

Having suffered almost every running injury imaginable, as well as multiple broken bones, he understands first-hand the frustrations that injuries can cause. This personal experience gives him unique insight into the challenges faced by athletes of all levels.
