He carries out endoscopic removal of large polyps of the bowel (EMR) and treats early cancers of the rectum by TEMS or TAMIS, which is a minimally invasive, organ-preserving approach to small, early rectal tumours.

His special interests include treatment for benign anorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal abscesses and anal fissure.

He offers various surgical options for treatment of haemorrhoids including;
  • Rubber band ligation (banding)
  • Injections
  • THD (Doppler guided haemorrhoid artery ligation)
  • HALO (Doppler guided haemorrhoid artery ligation)
  • RAFAELO (Radiofrequency ablation of haemorrhoids)
  • Traditional surgical haemorrhoidectomy
He offers BOTOX for anal fissures and various surgical options for anal fistulas including;
  • Fistula plug
  • LIFT (Ligation of fistula tract) procedure

In addition to surgical procedures, he provides wide-ranging, latest evidence-based consultations on functional bowel disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, acid reflux, indigestion, bloating and coeliac disease. He works closely with other allied specialties like gastroenterologists, dietitians and nutritionists, and believes strongly in a multi-disciplinary approach to improve his patients’ general gut health.

Patient Feedback

Here’s what some of his patients’ feedback look like:

"After reading positive reviews, I opted to see Dr. Arun Shanmuganandan for fistula treatment and was blown away by his warm, friendly manner. When Dr. Arun Shanmuganandan saw that I was nervous, he immediately put me and my family at ease. Throughout my fistula procedures and colonoscopy scan, I was kept informed about the possible options available and their pros and cons, I was well supported throughout my recovery period. Now I'm fully recovered and received excellent care from Dr. Arun Shanmuganandan and the Shirley Oaks hospital medical team. It was easy for me to understand the information in the follow-up meetings as well as the decision to choose Dr. Arun Shanmuganandan and the Shirley oaks hospital was a good one."

"I was initially very anxious about undergoing a hemorrhoidectomy. Like many, I turned to the internet and found myself overwhelmed by horror stories that made me hesitant to proceed. Dr. Arun assured me the recovery would be relatively quick, although I still had some doubts lingering in the back of my mind. However, I am incredibly glad I went ahead with the procedure. The actual surgery was so quick it was completed in just 10 minutes, and to my surprise, I didn't experience any of the severe pain I had read about online. I kept waiting for the intense discomfort to hit, but it never came. While I was prepared for a tough recovery, my experience was far smoother than expected. Throughout the process, Dr. Arun’s calm demeanour and clear explanations helped ease my worries. The recovery instructions were straightforward and following them made all the difference. By focusing on maintaining a healthy diet and keeping my stools soft, I was able to manage any mild discomfort with ease. It’s been a few weeks now, and I’m so relieved that I decided to have this procedure done at an earlier age. Moving forward, I’ll make sure to prioritise my gut health by eating lots of wholegrains and maintaining a balanced diet. Dr. Arun’s guidance has not only helped me through the surgery but also set me on the right path for long-term health. For anyone considering this surgery, I highly recommend Dr. Arun. His expertise made this a much more manageable experience than I could have imagined."

"I cannot speak highly enough of 'Mr Arun.' He is a consummate professional in every way, thorough, efficient and has brilliant inter-personal skills. The very nature of his line of expertise means that you’re dealing with sensitive treatments for sensitive (sometimes embarrassing even) problems. But I was put totally at ease, from first minute through to my latest consultation, across physical and procedural investigations, and then comprehensive pastoral advice regarding managing things going forward. It's a special skill for a consultant to make you feel that your condition and your wellbeing are the most important things in their world, but that's exactly how Arun Prasath Shanmuganandan made me feel on each occasion I saw him. Totally, 100% recommended!"
