Arfan Malhi

Personal Profile

Mr Arfan Malhi qualified from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine London with distinction in the final MBBS examination. His basic surgical training was on the King's College Hospital rotation. There he obtained experience in General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic surgery as well as Accident and Emergency.

He then undertook a research post at the Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust before embarking upon higher Orthopaedic Surgical Training on the prestigious University College London / Middlesex Hospital Rotation.

He passed his final exit Orthopaedic Examination (FRCS Tr. & Orth.) in 2008. Sub-specialty training in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty was undertaken during a near year-long fellowship at the University of Manitoba Joint Replacement Group in Canada.

This is an extremely high volume centre with in excess of 1400 joint replacements performed per year. In addition, this unit undertook the majority of revision (re-do) hip and knee replacements from the entire province of Manitoba. As a result extensive experience and expertise was obtained in managing these very challenging patients. Trauma patients with fractures around hip and knee replacements (peri-prosthetic) were also transferred to here from around the province.

He obtained a full licence to practice Orthopaedic Surgery from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Manitoba, Canada.  Reg no.(16-741)

His Consultant career started at University College Hospital London before he was asked to join the team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. There he very soon established a busy practice in Hip and Knee arthroplasty with a sub specialty interest in revision surgery whilst maintaining a trauma practice. He has a particular interest in arthroplasty in high body mass index (BMI) patients and has presented internationally on this topic in Europe and North America.

He quickly took up the role of Trauma Lead for the trust and then moved on as the Arthroplasty Lead. He then became Clinical Lead for Trauma & Orthopaedics at University Hospital Lewisham in April 2016. He was also involved in the working group looking at reconfiguring Orthopaedic services in the South East London region.

Mr Malhi then moved to Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 2018 in order to be ideally placed for the centralisation of complex primary and revision arthroplasty from peripheral to teaching / specialist hospitals.

Mr Malhi retains a keen interest in medical education and is a GMC recognised trainer. He is involved in supervising medical students, junior doctors, Orthopaedic specialist trainees as well as providing subspecialty training to already fully trained Orthopaedic surgeons. He has also been invited to lecture / teach on FRCS revision courses.
