Mr Andrew Cattell is a specialist knee surgeon with particular expertise in sports knee injuries and knee replacement surgery at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. He sees self-pay patients only.
He has extensive experience in ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery, patellofemoral surgery and partial and total knee replacement surgery.
He studied Medicine at The University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, graduating in 1999. Following this, he trained in South Africa for several years gaining a broad experience of trauma and orthopaedics. He then continued his post-graduate training in the United Kingdom, undertaking his specialist orthopaedic training on the prestigious Oswestry rotation in 2011. Here, he developed an interest in sports knee surgery and knee replacement surgery.
He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016, and completed a Complex Trauma fellowship in Nottingham in 2017. This was followed by UK-renowned fellowship posts in Sports Knee and Knee Replacement Surgery in Wrightington Hospital and Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (Exeter). Here, he gained experience in dealing with all aspects of knee surgery.
Mr Cattell has completed a master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University, with his dissertation evaluating the development of a novel knee replacement. His knowledge of engineering and biomechanical principles allows him to tailor his treatments for optimal results and explain treatment options in an understandable manner.
He was appointed to James Cook University Hospital in 2019 and has a busy NHS practice managing major orthopaedic trauma. His elective practice focuses on knee complaints.
Mr Cattell has maintained an interest in medical education and is the Educational Lead for the orthopaedic department. He is the Clinical Supervisor for several registrars and teaches on both local and national specialist orthopaedic exam courses.
His practice centres around individual patient care. He ensures that a diagnosis is clearly explained and all aspects of potential treatments are discussed and tailored to the individuals condition and lifestyle to ensure an optimal result.
